ATF discussion

I don't know much about different fuids but have read the Surf requires Dextron2, which precedes Dextron3. Whilst reading I come across some racing ATF fluid where they reckon they can keep temperatures down with this type of fluid as well as boasting (bulling?) longer transmission life, and fluid life expectancy.

I was wondering if anyone had tried any race type fluid or similar in their transmissions for numerous reasons i.e. lower temperatures for towing or quicker gear changes?

That being said, is there a specific brand of Dextron3 I should be buying when I change my fluid this Saturday?

Your transmission is already an OAP, 'racing fluid' won't help it now, just stick to standard Dexron III ATF.


p.s. The ECU/sensors control the gear changes, not the fluid.

At a guess (and I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong) the same old mantra applies to ATF as it does to oil...

Buy the cheaper stuff and change it more often.

Thats what I've always sworn by and it's always worked well for me.

I wholeheartedly agree about using good oil, with the exception of some of the "snake oil" the big oil companies tell us are worth £10 a bottle more than a "lesser" brand.

EDIT: I remember plenty of classic stories of mates straining old engine oil through an old pair of tights and then reusing it in their ratty Jap 4 cylinder bike. Never sounded like a good idea when reasonable oil was never that expensive...

I also recall someone getting an old Honda Superdream and when they came to change the oil the day after they got home with it spotted that there was no sump bolt and the sump plug was blocked up with chemical metal!

A common misconception. They are worth more, if they weren't nobody would buy them. But this isn't anything to do with Tony's original question.

As Vince said, use Dextron 111 and change it when it gets discoloured (or every couple of years).
