  • More toys!

    Look what just arrived yesterday.

I look forward to fitting that. Should make off road much more fun

I use one of them, it actually makes off road more boring.

But it does make you want to do more extreme stuff.

Yes but yours is in the front!

          Looks that way!
Flying was excellent by the way. The instructor let me taxi, take off and he showed me a few turns in the air and how the rudder improves the turns.
We also had the fun of watching a spitfire taxi and take off and then complete a good number of low passes whilst we were completing our run up checks. I look forward to the next lesson.

Hmmm nice do you already have a locker on the front? Why did you decide on that on over some of the others??

I'm not putting a locker in the front at all. I decided on the lockright purely on cost. It is about half the price of the Detroit equivelant. Based on user reviews it performs almost the same although the locking and unlocking is a little delayed compared to Detroit (so I've read). I cannot see this being an issue.

The actual components I have is two "aircraft grade" steel gears which marry up to the planetary gears inside the diff. There are some springs and some washers also. I'll need someone experienced to help me fit it I think.

They say if you are going to fit a locker, then install it in the rear first. This is because of weight distribution when accelerating or climbing.
There are some considerations when installing a locker in the front. especially without free wheeling hubs.

For example, if I were to install a locker in the front of a standard surf, there is a risk of understeer as both front wheels may become locked together during a turn. This is because the front diff always turns with the wheels.

I think I will need to be careful in the wet especially. I wont be letting mum drive the surf in the wet without going through this with her first.

However, I look forward to driving out of a turn without one wheel madly spinning and the truck going no where. I also look forward to climbing uneven hills and having traction even when one or two wheels are off the ground

If I ever sell the Surf, I can replace the internals of the current open diff back to stock

Hmmm let me know how you get on with it. I wander if it will be a problem coping with the v8 extra grunt. I am in two minds about going all out and getting the ARB one fitted to the rear!!! Or trying one of the auto ones!!

P.s just added you on FB

The rear axles can handle the extra power no problem, having a rear locker actually reduces stress to some extent because both axle shafts will be driven not just one with an open diff.

Tony, whats the damage getting one of those to my front door?

I didnt go with the ARB ones because of the cost, and the hasle of the wiring, compressor or solenoid. The auto ones are completely maintenance free / automatic. We'll see how it goes.

I'd expect you would break half shafts before you break the diff. In the below photo you can see the two centre pieces are the lockright differential. The very top piece is one of the planetary gears as you would find on your current diff (this is not changed).

So it's just installing the two solid machined steel pieces to marry up to your gears.
I know roughly how a diff works but I've never taken one apart for myself so I could be mistaken about the details.

Cheers for the add. I've got 3 pending requests and I don't know who is who. I'll sort that when I'm home

But buy directly from Powertrax if you're going to buy at all. I got it for quite a bit cheaper than that price.

They are a POP to install, only issues I've had is that one of the pins sheared, easy to fix.

Ive got Aussie lockers in both axles, as many have mentioned, fitting a locker in the back axle is like switching to full time 4WD..awesome

As for driving with an auto locker, the only time i notice it really is when accelerating round a steep, tight bend like a switchback. Then you can hear the inside wheel snatching round, no real issue tho

In the front, not a bother either. I disconnected the automatic switching of 4WD in LO, so I can select when I want 4WD regardless off ratio (using the usual button on the transfer stick). I'd say I dont use 4WD half as much now, only when really struggling. Steering isnt really an issue either, you can feel the steering 'load' up with the difference of turning radius, but no worse than the centre diff' loading up with difference in turning radius, if you're not on tarmac..not a worry.

See Calos' vid for a nice example of the difference, my truck (black one) in 2wd vs Cal's in 4wd

Hehe yeah I remember that well, my truck was 100% standard then would be good to get down there and give that a try now with my truck as is, in 2wd with the articulation/lift and tyres is has now, wouldn't beat yours but could be interesting.

                              peace
