  • FTO or Celica??

What should I get? The 1.8 vvti Celica or the non Mivec FTO. not looking for any GT4s or win turbos or any of that stuff, just a simple sports coupe that wont spin off the road the first time the wife blips the throttle too hard, and that hopefully will be reliable, and not too costly to fix when its not

Tough choice, love the Celica, and the Toyota-ness of it. But helped a friend shop for FTO's awhile back, and very impressed with them.

If its any help, he ended up with a Celica!!

Get the VVTLi, extra 40 bhp @6200 rpm. (7500 redline) means you can have fun in it too.
The only downside is it's front wheel drive.

There's a chap here at work who has a vvti, and likes it. He's never had a moment's trouble with it either.

The GT4 wont spin your wife off the road when she blips the throttle. It has so much grip it will just fire her straight through whatever she's pointing at

...and getting cheaper now too. Dealer down the road has a black one on his forecourt for £6k

            Oil's a bit pricey though!

a little top up with oil every 1000 miles is worth the look and performance of the car.

was looking at one myself as the insurance is quite cheap.

Costs a fortune to run generally. Mate of mine had one from new and it cost him more to run than his house! (well, it almost seemed like it to hear him talk about it!) He absolutely loved that car though and was sad to see it go when he sold it.

Personally, I'd probably go for the Celica cos they should be cheaper to run than either an FTO or a RX8. Should be more reliable than an FTO too - a guy I worked with had one and it did seem to need a bit of looking after in comparison to the Celica I had at the time (2 litre ST202 if you google for them).

If I really wanted to I could get over 40mpg out of the Celica or it would happily cruise at 120mph all day (on an autobahn obviously!) and still give me 30mpg.

It was fairly roomy for the type of car too. I regularly used to carry an ex of mine and her 3 kids and I did a camping trip with 4 adult passengers in it (although that was admittedly a bit of a squeeze and the passengers took it in turns to sit on the very uncomfortable middle rear passenger seat).

A couple of other things to consider might be an MX-5 (or other MX as a Jap import) or even a Mazda 323 coupe (if you see a nice one) cos they're both fairly nice cars in their own way.

Another friend of mine had a Renault Megane (I think) coupe which was quite nice.

Also maybe worth bearing the Honda coupes in mind as well (Jap imports)

                  Celica every time for me.
                  Our first one...

I'd love to fit GT4 running gear to one, a la Fensport.

In my experience with both, the Celica is by far a better nicer car. Both v6 FTOs are sluggish, although there is a huge club following, they look nice and are quite nice inside, the driving position is nice too. If you like that type of car and like 80s sports cars have you seen the Starion? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1985-MITSUBISH...item19bce340e3

Isn't the life expectancy on the rotary seals about 60k miles? Not sure if it's improved on the RX8. Fantastic engines though!

if i was looking for good MPG, then i wouldnt buy either of the cars, if your looking for a good nice quick sports car then the RX8 would come top. A cheaper one then id go with the celica.

my MPG on the surf is rather dire compared to an old focus i have driven, but i chose the surf because it looks good and is good off road.

personally, i shall be getting an RX8 in a couple of years to accompany the surf. just have to decide if i want to stay in my current job first or join back up in the military.

I looked at the cars mentioned in this thread as well as a couple of others but I ended up with the Celica after a lot of research.
Given the same choices I'd have another, here's mine.

Well, the Celica seems to be the forum favourite, but in the end I got the FTO. I had looked for a while and had found a low mileage mint Celica and a similar FTO. The Celica unfortunately was white and Im not a fan, Every stone chip shows up and rust spots if you get any glare out at you so I opted for the FTO which is a metallic silver. Im impressed so far. I like it, and wife likes it. Its a V reg import, came in to the UK in November 2006. Its undersealed and I got it MOT,d a couple of days ago with no advisories. Its a pleasure to drive and the bonus is that because the wife likes it, it will keep her out of the Surf.

If your both happy with it then it's a good result, sure you'll get on great with it, plenty of mods out there for it too .
