Could be the pressure switch on the engine thats gone bad or wiring. It's on the driver's side of the engine (2.4) near the bellhousing with a single wire clipped onto it.

If you had no oil pressure the engine would be making lots of nasty noises and shortly after, seize up!

            Hi Bav1

If the gauge was over the top for a short while, that
may be a dead short in the wiring between the sender
and the gauge, the NO pressure, may now be a lost, or
broken connection on the same circuit. If you earth the
sender wire the gauge should go right off the scale, if
not it could be the gauge it's self.

            Hope this helps.

            Gman.
If it aint broke, keep goin' till it is.

thanks grassman thats my thinking to

i think i have found the cable goes to a little whats seems to be single spade connector does that sound right if so i assume i open this again and touch the spade to ground ?

going to get an oil/filter + fuel filter change done next week as well as getting the garage to look at the rattle and as the senders are only £5 going to get that replaced may also upgrade the wire

i do have a few bulbs gone in the dash cluster too sonds like a good excuse to replace them just need to find a writeup what bulbs and whereto get them

              thanks again
