            Back on topic briefly (and bearing in mind I stopped doing physics at school when I was 14), the noise sounds to me like something that's 'clutched' somehow, so it stops firing when you take your foot off the pedal, picks up gently as it re-engages when the revs drop to whatever level and goes off again as you accelerate.

            I would suspect rev counter, transmission or turbo if they weren't all highly improbably for a number of reasons.
