  • One billion in the UK

This is too true to be funny (which is why I didn't put it in the "Jokes forum!!).

The next time you hear a politician use the
word 'billion' in a casual manner, think about
whether you want the 'politicians' spending
    YOUR tax money.

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend,
but one advertising agency did a good job of
putting that figure into some perspective in
    one of its releases.

    A.
A billion seconds ago it was 1959.

    B.
A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.

    C.
A billion hours ago our ancestors were
    living in the Stone Age.

    D.
A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.

    E.
A billion Pounds ago was only
    13 hours and 12 minutes,
    at the rate our government
    is spending it.

    Stamp Duty
    Tobacco Tax
    Corporate Income Tax
    Income Tax

    Council Tax

    Unemployment Tax

    Fishing License Tax
    Petrol/Diesel Tax
    Inheritance Tax
    (tax on top of tax)
    Alcohol Tax
    V.A.T.
    Marriage License Tax
    Property Tax
    Service charge taxes
    Social Security Tax
    Vehicle License Registration Tax
    Vehicle Sales Tax
    Workers Compensation Tax

    STILL THINK THIS IS FUNNY?

Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago...
and our nation was one of the most prosperous in the world.

We had absolutely no national debt...

we had the largest middle class in the world...
and Mum stayed home to raise the kids.

    What happened?
    Can you spell ‘politicians?'

I hope this goes around the UK

    at least 100 times.
    What the hell happened?????

Because she wasn't allowed to work or even vote.

Theres always somebody wants to spoil everything with the truth. Not that it matters as most people will elect to believe the junk version anyway, same as they all believe that every council house is full of unemployed immigrants with free X boxes living in the lap of luxury.

Cos at that time we had made rather a lot of money from slavery and the theft of natrual resources from the countries we colonised.

The UK abolition of slavery act was 1833 and there was a movement towards that well before then.
"Theft" of natural resources (I don't believe the locals were using them much at the time!) still occurs today. You can't really judge fairly the standards of yesteryear by the standards of today. There is no doubt in my mind that the British Empire was a force of good at the time relative to what was around it.

Seeing as we're going down this strange road, I thought this graph might be of interest. We're not in terrible shape at the moment, compared to some times in our past. What happened to all our money? Not politicians, but two world wars (and one world cup, doo-dah)

I know that slavery was abolished before 100 years ago, but the money made from it was clearly still floating around in various forms around at the time the OP talks about (notice that i said 'we had made rather a lot of money',. Slavery was a big contributor to the UK's wealth at the time. And i'm aware that we still take unfairly from other nations, but it's not exactly on the same scale or with the same force as in the colonial days...

Absolutely - but there is too much of a habit for people (not yourself in anything you've posted here I hasten to add) to run down and be negative about ye olde colonial days. Of course bad things happened but overall it was a much more positive influence on the world than a negative one.
