  • air con & towing help please!

    hi there surf dudes!

Can anyone help me out with a couple of questions please?

i need to put a towbar on my beast ('93 2nd gen 2.46 import) that can hall up to 3 tonnes (pallets of bricks etc) can anyone recommend a good place to have one fitted in or around Northamptonshire?

Also, the air conditioning in my surf aint cold at all, i took it to a garage in town who said that because it is an import, it uses an illegal gas, r12 0r r16 i think (sorry that technicality floated away out my ear and into the ethos!)
Is it true that i'll not get my surf re-gased in this country? if it is can i convert it in any way?

Lastly hello to the growing tribe of surfers i see round sunny kettering these days if any of you read the forum!

Many thanks for any pearls of wisdom you'd care to share!

    cheers

    Claire

Try doing a search on the Air con..there has been a topic in the past about the refilling of the air-con unit

Sounds like a load of bull to me, aircon is aircon its like a fridge with a rad instead of a cold box. I can get mine refilled for £40 when I need it done.

The towbar thing, you need a braked trailer I believe but any good towbar should be ok, ask Hormygollop for a witter, they seem good and strong.

R12 was the original gas used and due to it not being so environmentally friendly is no longer used. RS24 is the direct replacement for it, R134a can also be used but the valves seals will need to be changed due to its density as it will leak from the system.

3 tonne is way over the legal limit for the surf so be careful, you can tow 100% of your surfs weight around 2 tonne but watch your clutch. a braked trailer is also a legal requirement for this weight

To haul 3 tonne pallets of bricks you will need a minimum of a 7.5 tonne truck..........They carry that load legally and weigh about 4tonne empty. Dont mess around with these thoughts it is taken very serious if you are over weight you look at £1000 a tonne fine...

Find out where the local ice cream vendors get their vans/fridges serviced. My local ice cream van mech topped up my illegal R12 with a legal (and compatable) equivalent for a drink (He thought I was being too generous giving him £10.00). He only used about 10 grams of gas. My aircon is still going well after a month.
                  It's only a hobby!

                    Gas

there are firms that specialise in degassing air con units. Your local garage or repair center should be able to recommend someone. As you surf is an Import it will need some modification and a different gas put in. I only know this as she who must be obeyed's car is in the shop having the head done, we've been quoted £150 + the dreaded vat. please dont use your surf to drag 3 tons around you will only end up in lots of trouble.
                    Regards
                    Mike

Not to mention the fact that the towed vehicle needs to be capable of managing that weight and should be marked as such on a plate attached to the chassis. Add the weight of this vehicle to the weight of the bricks and you are in very, very dangerous terrritory - a menace to yourself and all other road users.

whoops! ok guys thanks 4 the warnings, i hear you!!

Let me explain - i have a wee gardening business so the max i'll be towing will be a few plants n a bit o top soil, my bloke however, has a conservatory business so needs to transport the odd pallet of bricks, he reckoned the max he'd ever want to pull would be the 3t, but fear not fellow road users, we'll make two trips if necessary!

Thanks all! I'm off chasing icecream vans (any excuse!)
