  • Turbo oil leak

    Hi there folks,

What are the diameters/lengths of tubing going into and out of the turbo?

Just thought I'd ask cos it's quite difficult to get in to measure them without starting to take it to bits and I'd rather only do that the once if I possibly can!

From how it looks to me there is oil coming out of one of the rubber pipes which is getting burnt off (smelly and smokey!) and causing a patch of oil to appear on the road outside my house. I don't mind the old dear marking her territory but I think it's about time I sorted it!

Assuming it's just tubing that needs replacing at least it'll be a cheap fix...

EDIT: by the way I've looked at this already... http://toyotasurf.asn.au/techsite/tu...oveinstall.htm

not sure of sizes but how about fitting jubilee clips instead of those other ones already fitted

Thats what I was planning on doing but I thought I might as well replace the hoses while I was there anyway. I can always nip out and get stuff on the motorbike if I need to but it's a bit awkward fitting it around running the little 'un around (I've never tried fitting his car seat to the back of the bike!) lol

Where abouts is the oil leaking out from?
The turbo is oil and water fed by small pipes about the width of you little finger. The boost pipes are what feed your engine and what connect to your exhaust. Excessive oil in the exhaust or inlet pipes will make it a bit smokey.

Have had a look at it tonight with the heatshield off and I'm not 100% certain but it seems to be coming from right in the middle of the whole shebang which is a bit of a pain cos it looks like a gasket gone rather than just tubing/jubilee clip type problems. Bummer.

The oil leak seems to be coming from the central section of the turbo where there are a couple of vertical threaded studs/bolts.

          Any thoughts anyone?!

I've never taken a turbo apart, but they can be rebuilt. I think it's not cheap. Not sure if it's something that can be done at home as I'm not exactly sure what is done when it's rebuilt.

If you do take it off, can you post back how much work it was? I would like to rebuilt mine if it weeps and if that is possible.

Can you tell if it's not just from where an oil pipe connects to it?

Cheers - I've already seen the LN130 kit they do for mine. I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to do yet. I've been looking at the possibility of doing a DIY refurb of the turbo cos as long as I'm careful it doesn't look too challenging. It seems scarey at first cos it feels like you're delving into a bit of black magic or something but having looked at things it shouldn't be too bad.

Firstly, all this gubbins about "balancing the turbo" is true to a certain extent but as long as everything is marked and reassembled in the same places it shouldn't be a problem.

Secondly, the roughtrax kit doesn't have replacement bearings in it. I have found a place that specialises in DIY turbo refurb kits (as well as actually doing full turbo refurbs and turbo tuning, etc) but unfortunately they don't include the manifold gaskets in their kit!

                *strokes chin thoughtfully*

I'll update once I've decided what I'm going to do.

I have got a 2.4 turbo here that if you cover p&p you can strip that down and play with as a practice one if you wanted.Just a thought to save buggaring yours if anything goes wrong

I was going to mention this.

The turbo on the 2.4 might be easier to get to since its about the same height as the top of the head. Just be careful when you remove the exhaust downpipe bolts that bolt to the outlet of the back of the turbo. These are known for threading (in my experience anyway!). What I have done before is wound the bolt off half a turn then wind back in a quarter. Keep doing this until it comes out.

Cheers Rich. I'll take you up on that offer. How much for postage? Or could it be packaged with the tow bar to reduce the cost of postage?
