  • something strange I never found the answer to

A customer brought their surf in to my garage when I worked there for a new custom exhaust. I had to drive it round the block to get into the workshop and it had a very strange problem I never felt before or found the answer to. When you drove in a straight line the surf always picked a direction and tried to drive there! You had to constantly correct the steering, it was almost impossible to keep it straight.
I just wondered what this could have been?
    Oh Nana, what's my name?

I doubt the Surf was looking for drugs.

I was thinking about the driver, not the truck.

Tram-lining due to the wide tyres finding imperfections in the road surface, such as shallow groves created by HGV's constantly using the same bit of road. Anything with wide tyres will tram-line and pull in different directions.

Sounds like the castor is out, castor helps the steering easier to keep in a stright line and also helps the steering "self center" after turning, castor angle is a comprimise and is at the expence of true toe-in and camber measurements, it works like shopping trolly wheels, they self center as they are at a angle to the verticle, angle being to the rear looking top to bottom

just done mine meself and my castor isn't quite right, it now has a tendancy to over steer and does need a slight help centering after a bend, but it aint bad and i can live with it

You could fit one of those, return to centre steering dampers.

I've fitted one of those to a truck, it works well on big tyres and big lifts where the caster is a little messed up.

but they are frigging annoying when trying to work on trucks brakes or steering, you can't leave the wheels pointing in any direction apart from ahead!

Would that fit a surf? it says defender fitment only, it might "self off center"

The fittments at both ends look the same as the Surf's.
I have a LandRover steering damper on my truck.

(Only because it was brand new and I got it for
                            £10)
