The points I was trying to make are.
The garage you have recommended don't appear to have much knowledge of the Surf.
In my personal opinion £170 for an oil change and a go at fitting rear springs is a tad steep.

However, if your happy to pay then as you say it has little to do with us.
Problem is when you post it on a forum you tend to get opinions, whether you want them or not.
Also I wouldn't want new members thinking we all agreed that this garage was good.

Sorry if you thought I was taking the p iss, I wasn't, I have a genuine interest in what work he did for the price.

The reason he could not fit them is because he uses a hoist and didn't realise that the weight of surf would house the spring,also presumed that I had supplied the wrong springs! But I suppose everyone on here is an expert.

Obviously the 'expert' you trusted to work on your Surf has never used spring compressors.

And don't go all shitty with us this early in your 'membership', you'll end up seriously out of pocket for any future help.

I don't understand what you don't understand! He had the lot apart to do the shocks and the springs wouldn't sit in as there was no weight put on them.

I'm still not 100% sure what you're saying is wrong here.

He lifted the truck on his hoist, took the old springs and dampers off, put the new ones on, let the truck down but the springs weren't compressed between the truck and the axle?

If that's the case, either the dampers are too long or the springs are too short.

How many garages do you know with "surf" knowledge?
You obviously didn't read the post properly and you must think I am a f!"&ing idiot if you think I would pay that for an OIL CHANGE !!!!
So for the benefit of others it was £170 for ALL 4 SHOCKS ,OIL CHANGE,FILTERS CHANGE, ENGINE FLUSH,WHEELS BALANCED and a go at changing the springs.I supplied the materials, so use him don't use him I won't be making any more recommendations on here, too many opinionated people

Hi Guys - you may have seen from my post over in the 2.4 technical area that I have had some starting issues which with the help of Wiggy suggest my Glow Plugs need changed.

I know a few guys on here are from Bonny Scotland and I was wondering if anyone can recommend a garage (as close to Glasgow as poss but I will travel for a reputable place) that can change the plugs and maybe do a service for me on the truck.

Alternatively I am happy to pay for the services of a fellow surfer if they fancy coming and getting their hands dirty with a noob!
Even if its just to change the plugs.

Any help..........please?

The true value of £40 is relative; to me, £40 isn't much, but to someone who only has £40, it's everything (literally). Personally, I think £40 per hour is a bit steep.



In days gone by, they used to call that exploitation...

Don't know about days gone by Andy (mabe I'm just tight) still exploitation for some in view of the current climate !!

~£40 an hour is around the mark for labour these days. 3 Hours for all that work (for a business with overheads) sounds reasonable.

The 'cant fit the springs' thing does sound odd though! I had mine (+3") out and back in on new spring locators with nothing but a jack, a stand, and a mate to jiggle the spring in while I bounced on the hub.

Also guys - forgot to say,

Upon inspection of my fuse box at the weekend I am missing the top left fuse which is marked as "fuel heater" - common sense tells me this isnt right.

Could this be the culprit of my starting problem or could there be a reason this fuse isnt there?

Glad you got sorted with someone to help out..... and shouldn't be any fuses missing (unless they have been purposely removed for whatever reason), and that sounds like one that should be in there as i would have thought it would definitely give you some issues when trying to start.
Replacing it is as good a place to start as any.

You will only have the fuel heater fuse fitted if you have the heated fuel primer.If you have not got any wires going to the fuel primer itself then you won't need the heater fuse.If your not sure what i am on about post a pic of your fuel filter housing and i'll tell you if its heated or not

TBH that makes some sense - the truck was cared for really well by the last owner and a fuse just missing for no reason would seem odd.
