  • 3rd Gen steering wheel replacement

    Hi all,

Off to looks at a 3rd gen over the weekend, if the pictures are anything to go by then I'll have it!
One thing i noticed is that it has a after market steering wheel and i'd be interested in replacing it with a original airbag version, I see PaulC did a post not so long ago regarding this in the HILUX SURF FORUMS - TECHNICAL > Technical - Mechanical - General forum and wanted to know if you need to do anything like reprogram the vehicle to say the Airbag has been replaced or is it simply a case of plug it in and jobs a gooden?
    Thanks

looking at the book it looks like you just plug in. you have to be careful when playing with the air bag system, i seem to remember that you have to power it down by disconnecting the batts and then leaving it for a while, but dont quote me on that

Think from memory it's a minimum of 90 seconds as it has an in built memory, personally I'd rather disconect the batteries and then have a coffe or something just to be sure before going back to it.

The vehicle might have been in an accident & the drivers airbag went off & it was repaired cheaply. Maybe that's why it has got an aftermarket steering wheel?

It might be worth checking the history of the vehicle.

If it has been repaired cheaply, what about the rest of the damage!

This did cross my mind, I've done a check using car text check and it looks clean from that, (I may to the RAC check as well) I need to keep an open mind when looking at it, though I know I'm a nightmare and will just want it!!!!

I think theres better indicators of accident damage fixed on the cheap, than a "bling" steering wheel, and Im sure you would be looking for these anyway.I
