  • Now What?

The truck has been making a strange, light rumbly sort of noise (can't describe the right sound) for the last couple of days. Not all the time, only now and again. I thought it might be low tyre pressures, but checked it out and they were all spot on.

Got out of the truck tonight and there was that burning smell you normally associate with brake pads being low. The thing is I only changed them last August before I did the Scotland trip with Yoshie and co. They weren't the cheap ones either as I was warned off them.

So it looks like Saturday morning is investigation time!

Could be a bearing getting hot

Give the exhaust a good look over. Does it rumble under acceleration only?
      Windows 7 was my idea!

Mine is too. Please let us know what you find.
        I'm leaning towards bearings.

I think bearings woud be a constant rumble and why the burning smell? New bearings (good quality ones) only fitted 4,000 miles ago, but will check them anyway.

Big tyres plus 30mm spacers does put extra load on the bearings of course. Will let you know what I find on Saturday (nothing too expensive I hope!)

I only replaced mine 12 months back and the offside one has had to be replaced as it had virtually fallen apart. Thing is it was only grumbling when under load (4wd in snow and ice) and not freewheeeling in 2wd.

Burning could be the grease getting hot ?

Cheers Andy, I'll be well miffed if it has gone after only 4,000 miles. It wasn't a cheapy!

Afraid not, it was bitterly cold and I don't do cold!

Not using the truck at the minute, so it's taking no harm. I'm changing the tyres back to muds tomorrow (weather permitting) so I'll have a good look around then.

Haha, Nor me. It snowed again here last night.

                      That's why I thought I'd ask you.

Well someone switched the snow off...

And as it's sunny and 15 degrees I went and had a Post winter check-over.

The rumbling noise I think is from the rear propshaft UJ's. Quite a lot of play in them.

Just looked, 15 quid from roughtrax.
