  • Spare wheel dilema

    Evening all,

I'm wondering if anyone has modded their swing away spare carrier? Mine gets right in the way when hitching up trailers, as I'm sure others will have found. But then the frustration continues when you have a trailer fitted and then need in the boot.... and then come out the boot with your hands full and need past wheel to the off side of the car and the wheel is in the way.... I might get easily annoyed by things but I'm sure there is something that could be done.

Has anyone raised the wheel mounting boss up a few inches or such? I was going to try this first, leaving the arms in the same position and just fitting the boss to some box section to move it up and slightly to the right.

Anyine done anything different, I thought about putting it in the boot but I already run out of space for crap in there!

      spare wheel dilema

Hia Cabbage, yes i had a problem with my hitch and rear mounted spare wheel. I tow a twin axle Avondale caravan with an AL-KO stabiliser hitch. I also had to remove the wheel and put it in the back. I cut the old mount off altered the wheel mounting bracket slightly. Lifted it 3 inches and moved it to the offside 2 inches. This now gives me loads of room to hitch up and leave the wheel on. Hope this helps. Take care

cool, I think i'll give that a go then.

I did think about slinging it underneath but though it would get really shitted up without building a propper cover and such.

Although I have not had an issue towing with it yet I would be intrested to see the mod in case it is needed when I eventally change the rad and want to put the twin axle caravan on it too.

I have found hitching up my twin axle van a bit of a pain, but having the motor mover does help.
I would think most 4x4's suffer from the same problem.

Will find out in a hour or so, going over to test the truck on the caravan, sure my reversing camera will help with the aligning though.
