  • Finally done the brakes

At long last.I didn't fancy a 600m plus trip at the weekend pulling the trailer to collect a truck with the brakes the way they were.
The o/s caliper was siezed solid so replaced that and fitted new pads to the front o/s and n/s and also fitted new shoes to the rear and ended up splitting the cylinder ruber so had to replace that aswell.Bled the brakes and now all running smooth again.Just have to givem chance to bind themselves in properly and all should be good

Well done Rich I would imagine a 600mile trip will give them a good chance to bed in.

Did mine last year, front disc's & pads "roughtrax" & i did'nt realize how poo they were till the new ones went on.

Checked them a few weeks ago & all looks well, wearing even & still about 2/3 of meat on the pads.
If its not broke don't fix it.

I got some last year from my local auto factors. they cost more than the Toyota pads so i thought i was getting a better pad but wernt anywhere near as good. Plus the main reason i changed them back was because the aftermarket pads squeeked REALLY bad! CONSTANTLY!

Ok brakes............ will be changing the front pads like this http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/techsite/brakes.htm
the front pads seem easy enough but were the rear shoes a bugger to fit and i guess you needed to bleed the system?
The sh$t gets deeper ...but still swimming

                      Hi Rob.
1/I slackened the handbrake from under the truck near the trans box.Once the wheel is off then you will need 2 xlong bolts to fit into the hubs in order to pull the hub off.
2/Once the hub is off you will need to take the spring off of the bottom of the shoes and then the top spring. They are very strong and can be tight/awkward to unclip them.
3/You will the need to take the 2 x retainers off which you can see one on each shoe.
Once these are off then the shoes will come off.
4/I then cleaned the adjuster right up and the done it up so once everything is fitted the drum will slide on easy.
5/Once the drum and wheel is fitted i used a small flat screwdriver to poke through the hole in the back to adjust the handbrake just till the brakes tighten slightly when you turn the wheel.
6/Once all that has been done i then tightend the cable underneath the truck ( the one that was slackened off at the start) I only tightened this up till the slackness was taken out the cable and then test drove the truck to make sure everything was ok then just tightened the cable a little more to clear any slack left.
7I had to bleed the brakes as i had to change a rear cylinder and front caliper.
You shouldn't have to bleed yours unless the brake lines have been un-done
Be careful when takeing and re-fitting the shoes on the rear that you do not split the rubbers on the cylinders as i did.
                      Hoe this helps

Ta very much for typing that up Rich, much appreciated as there is a lot of stuff about for the front ones and not too much about the back brakes.
Going to do the front ones first after i get the biggie stuff out the road to get a bit of confidence, then if thats fine....see how the back ones go. Starting to get the hang of doing work to the truck now ...not actually as scary as i first thought.....

Oh by the way .....do i need the specialised 'beer' tool to successfully complete this job lol

i would have one before hand and another at hand while doing each side then once completed have a skin full.
Take the reservoir cap off when taking the old pads out so you can release the pistons on the calipers and push them back to be able to get the new pads fitted.
Make sure Holli keeps the beers coming if all goes to pot

Haha will do ..just to check...... part number '34Heineken58' and i need 6 of them for the job...
Thanks for the tip ....just waiting on a couple of other things to get to sort the rest out (just the spring compressors and a big set of pliery things (tech description!).....and the weather ...then can get started in.
Need to get it all sorted by the end of April just in case we dont end up staying put here.

Ta very much again for the help.

Today i have done a complete coolant flush and refill. This is the first time the truck has actually had anti-freeze in it.
I have also done the ATF.Drained out and re-filled with about 4l of atf.
I thought its about time i gave the beast a decent serice as it hasn't ever been done since i've had it.I have done the filters and changed the oil but never done a proper service.
It seems to be running a bit quieter now anyway and the gear change is better.I thought i better do the ATF cause the last time i went to Bushy's the temp was in the red and the ATF warning light was on and the old atf was stinking
