Tyre Wear Rate Question

Can anyone give me an honest answer to the question of the difference in wear rate between a BFG A/T and M/T? I KNOW there will be an obvious difference, but speaking to different suppliers, I was surprised at the difference in their answers.
Only asking cos my truck will no longer be my daily driver, so considering M/T's,

I have had Khumo MTs on for 4 years and about 3000 miles per year the fronts are starting to show the age but the rears are fine. appart from the chunks of rubber missing due to the good old welsh rock!

Like Ross I also have KL71 Muds on for about 2 years 5000+ miles a year (look about half wornto me) "BPS could confirm this if his memory is better than mine" Good in the Wet n Dry alike .. Gruesome offroad !!

Thanks for the replies. Interesting to see that one reviewer of the m/t got 84k miles out of a set - pretty damn good I'd say, but I am not that sure about it!

84k miles? That would be hard to believe from any set of tires, or in fact many new cars.

84k miles? That would be hard to believe from any set of tires, or in fact many new cars.

My dad bought a Renault 16 from new in 1973, the only time he ever bought a car from new. He owned it til it was scrapped in about 1980 ish with somewhere about that sort of mileage and it was still on the original tyres (Michelins).

Whether it be urban myth or truth, I was told by a former Michelin employee (from Stoke-on-Trent's Michelin factory) that Michelin had a low wear rate tyre which was available for a short while at about that sort of time. The tyre (allegedly) ceased production because Michelin realised they wouldn't sell many tyres if they didn't wear out!

Having said that, my dad always used to drive like some sort of old granny on a trip to church on a Sunday!

ive run both 33" BFG AT's and 31" Kuhmo KL17 muds and the kuhmos surprised me how well they stand up to wear. it was hard to believe those big chunky lugs didnt just grind down after a week but after about 5000 miles they were not even half worn and were mostly driven on tarmac 7 days a week.
the BGF's, well they are renounded for their outstanding wear rate compared to any other AT. mine just dont seem to wear down at all.
personal prefference at the end of the day. depending how serious the off roading you will be doing of course. if nothing too dramatic i'd say stick with the BFG's if your concerned about wear rate. but it wouldnt matter too much either one you went with imo. muds arent as comfy as AT's. another thing to think about.

I bought my second car new in 1984 (Tax free 1.6 Escort Ghia) and IIRC it came shod with Michelin XZX's which lasted 45k miles. I was more than happy with that since I used to cane it everywhere. When I replaced them I was supplied with Michelin ZX's as the XZX had allegedly been discontinued because they were too hard wearing ....

I currently run Michelin Energy's on the Fawcus and get around 25k for the fronts and 45k for the rears BUT I drive like an old man for 95% of the time too (The other 5% is cos I don't slow down for corners which might explain the difference in wear rates !)

My BFG M/T's have about 7k on them and they have loads of tread left, BFG wear really slowly compared to most M/T's and they grip the tarmac really well.

I'll have to make up my mind then! Like I said, it's not my main driver these days but which ever, I'll stick with BFG's. I will just be going like for like, 31x10.5x15 - nothing too big!
