  • what is this switch ?????

    Just bought my first Surf - a 3rd gen 3L SSR-X auto.

No it's not a question about the little red switch, or ECT ...... but there is a black rectangular rocker switch which is cable tied to the floor cross member under front passenger seat.

It is a Toyota branded switch, black in colour and has 'OFF' printed on one side of the rocker. It is similar shape and size as would fit in the dash switch blanks.

It is not fog lamp, rear window, idle speed.

It does have two wires to it, which disappear under the carpet so can't see where they go without lifting carpets.

Any idea what switch does (or supposed to do) as i cannot work it out ??

    Thanks
    Nick

          have you tried it?

the remote unit for the keyfob locking is under the seats ( on 2nd gens anyway) it might be an override for that or something.

Yeah, did wonder about that as the switch is hidden for a reason presumably. However it doesn't seem to make any difference what position it is in, unless it has been disconnected further along the circuit.

            Never mind - thanks anyway

It could be something odd like a disconnect switch for the electric ariel (so you can stop it going up when the stereo is turned on, for when you are playing cds or whatever).

Or even a disconnect switch for the reversing bleeper (not the one under the dash, but maybe one at the back of the truck (I had one under the rear bumper that was far too loud).

Best way to try is to try it in one position......and do everything....absolutely everything...drive, reverse, lights, wipers, radio, lock car, unlock, windows down...the lot.

...then try the same in the other position.

...either that.....or just follow the wire

...or stick a multi-meter over the switch and see if there is power to it in any position.

That's the switch that supports the mechanism that kept the banks solvent.

You didn't switch it to off did you?

Someone switched the insolvency switch off before i bought the vehicle .... that may account for a lot then.

I will try Ava Banana's suggestion when i get a chance though - thanks for that

I bet it's the switch for rotating your number plates or maybe an oil slick for muppets that sit on your backside as your going along.

but of course the switch doesn't work !!!

I had a similar switch on my old Mk3 Zephyr that operated real police 'two tones' (when they used to have them)

Probably not that, but goes to show that people fit all sorts to their cars so it could work anything.

Sorry, not much actual help am I.
