  • Caravan question.

Ive just bought a caravan & everything works ok, however im not too sure on the heating system.

On the control panel there is a switch that says water/ heating & water, now when running on gas the heating runs fine "boiler off" but when running on electric the heating only works if the boiler is switched on.

The question i have is is it ok to have the boiler on even though there is no water in the tank, will it burn anything out".

    Its a bessacarr 500/2.

P.S i know this isn't a caravan forum but ive looked on the net & came up with nothing.

No no no no no no no.
Do not run the boiler dry, always make sure you have water in the on-board tank and the pump on so that it keeps the boiler fed.

So why does the central heating work on gas but not electric.

the boiler will switch off when the water's hot, so if there's no water, then it won't switch off!!

make sure you run the water through first... i.e. open all the taps till watter runs out without sputtering.

and remember to drain the boiler when you're finished for the winter (there will be a drain plug on the outside)
nee nar nee nar, i'm a fire engine!

Right im with you so far but still don't get why i can run the central heating on gas but when on electric you need the boiler on?

Possibly because it's a gas heating system and not electric. Our caravan has a similar system and the gas heater is fired up by a piezo (sp) ignition, not even connected in any shape or form to the elec.

usually a gas fire runs the central heating...

probably runs like a radiator, not an electric convector... so it circulates the hot water through the heating.

Lets start with the basics ...

Make, model and year of the van

Make & model of the heating system

                PS
This is the best place to ask about caravans !

My booklet clearly states it will run on gas/electric or both, but mentions nothing about the boiler switch.

That's because, as with all Caravanners, they have been distracted by the early onset of dementia. Still at least you forget your genitals have shrivelled up.
                      Non intercooled nothing.

To be honest the symptoms you describe don't make much sense - I don't know of any system that links the heating and hot water systems (Not that I've met many caravan systems !)

Is it a Carver/Truma or is it an Alde system ?

ALDE 3000 COMPACT HEATING & HOT WATER SYSTEM.

                            Control panel is a PMS2000GB

                            Does that help any mate.

It helps me a lot but does bugger all for you !

I know NOTHING at all about the Alde but it wouldn't be a total surprise to learn that there's a connection between the heating and hot water systems cos it's a WET heating system .....

Best bet is to post on T&T cos there's a few on there that have done the Alde maintainance course and I'd be very surprised if anybody else on here has got a van with an Alde system
