Radio has to come out. (3rd Gen)

ok, my sony cdx-m800 has finaly expired all together, apparently I need to change the flexi lead in the head unit.
I've seen the 'how to', get at the radio, courtesy of the Slugman on the electrical technical section. First bit says-'pull off the heater control knobs', are these glued on perchance? I've had a tentative 'pull', but they seem to be quite comfortable there at the moment. How rough do you need to be to simply 'pull them off'?
Is it a case of 'squeeze' and pull, 'push' and pull, 'push the bit in the middle' and pull, or a 'pull like your life depends on it' pull.
I've broken more bits of trim in my time than I care to remember, to know when something does'nt want to come off.

thanks for that, will have to be firmer and more ascertive?
Will try and take some piccs as I go for future reference, up to now there is just the literary descriptives for this.
