Hi all thinking of buying a j reg surf 2.4 td what should i be looking for as i am no mechanic any advice will be greatly appreciated.
thanks graeme
As always with the 2.4's, pay very careful attention to the cylinder head as they are prone to failure. A good few miles on test drive should help. Check rear window is fully functional as can be costly to repair!
Do a full lock to lock on the steering for big clonking noises!
Other members on here more knowledgeable than I on this model will suggest other things. Listen to them as they do know their stuff.
Having had both 2.4 and 3.0 2nd Gens - I think I'd pay a bit more and get a 3.0, they seem to be a much more capable machine and don't seem to have same degree of head issues as the 2.4. The head went on my 2.4, this problem does seem to be very common on them. Or perhaps fing that's had a new head.
As said a 3.0ltr would be better for the power side of things but in all honesty the head can go on any vehicle if poorly maintained, we have had some 3.0ltr heads go but it's not common, generaly the surf is a solid 4x4 and much better than many others I could mention.
Do the same checks you would with any other vehicle and read the above links so your armed with a bit more info, if your still not sure take someone that knows what to look for if you can, but all you need is here.

I wouldn't worry too much about the rear window as mine was goosed when I got it but I still had the old motor. I picked one up from a 91 mr2 on fleabay for £20 (it doesn't fit in in the normal way but if you turn it 180 degrees it will fit, the connector was different though so all I did was cut the connector from the old one and attach it to the new motor using a wee connector block and it works a treat)

is this bad news? as mine somtimes does this but only when on hard full lock in tight spaces (the steering issue that is)
My 1st offroader was a 2.4 and i used that for about 3 or 4 years it was bog standard only thing i changed was the tyres had loads of fun and no problems, had my Mreg 3litre T/D 3 years i just replaced the front diff for the 2nd time both rear 1/2 shaft bearings, brake shoe,s and brake drums and changed the idler arm twice. Only thing different i did on the 2.4 was i steam cleaned after each day offroad, my 3litre was made for offroad so i did not clean it that often, just prepareing another 3litre for offroading then i will be selling my Mreg.
