............. and fair play to you mate. I guarantee you that half of the haters couldn't afford to buy one to start with. For what its worth, I actually liked the looks of the Nitro when it was first released in the UK, still do.

If anything goes wrong, you've got your warranty. Got to laugh though, people having a pop about its reliability when they own a vehicle with what is quite possibly the most poorly engineered cylinder head in the history of diesel engines.

Stick to your guns mate. I bet some of our Surfs will have been through two or more heads, 3 rear window mechanisms, a set of rear springs and a steering idler by the time you get rid of your Nitro.

My truck has over 120,000 miles and original head.

        Oh ,I bought a proper one. 3.0.

And original window mech ( i maintain it ) and its a 15 year old truck.

Had it's first set of idler bushes last year ( £3 from roughtrax )

If that dodge lasts as well as my surf then I gladly take back all the negative things I think/say about them.

I can believe it Alan, but it doesn't take much use of the search function to find some very common issues. By the very same token, the Dodge should offer reliability at least the equal of the Surf if properly maintained. Our own trucks hardly have a reputation for being trouble free outwith this forum.

My current 3.0 is on its second head at 135000 miles. Its Surf number 3 for me, two 3 litres Autos and a 2.4 Auto. A good mate has a 2.4 manual on its 2nd head (a 3.0 head) and its an excellent truck, far better on fuel than mine but not as much fun to drive. I bought this one cheap and expected to have some issues to sort out, I wasn't disappointed on that score but we're nearly there now.

I just think its a bit rich to have a pop at the perceived poor reliability of the Dodge when most of us have probably never even sat in one. Our own cars are hardly renowned with the general motorist in this department.

Had it 2 years & ive yet to replace anything on my 1996 3ltr surf.

We're only having a laugh mate. In all fairness when you post a picture of a Dodge on a surf website there is going to be a bit of pi55 taking.

              Happy days.

I'm only having a laugh with chris ( and he knows it ) I just don't like the look of it much and I know it's not as tough as a surf. pity they don't put the yank engines in them for the uk, might be worth having then.

A bit of merciless leg pulling never hurt anybody. I love my Surf and I'll keep it til it dies. Some of the comments on the Honest John forum are a pure p*ss take regarding the Nitro though, motivated more by envy than knowledge I suspect.

That said, I wouldn't spend £14k on one, its not worth £12k more than a Surf in my money. Not that I have a spare £14k lying around doing nothing, I'd have to finance it and I don't go down that road any more. If I can't afford it straight off, I buy something I can. Thats why we have a Surf and a Micra, bought and paid for and maintained by me. All run on less than half the monthly cash it'd cost to have something like that sitting on the drive going nowhere.

I can see your point but you're comparing a 15 year+ vehicle with a brand new one. Most of the problems on the surfs appeared after a good 10 years or so....

My own 2.4 had a blown head when I bought it so I'm well aware of these problems. The difference is in the rest of the vehicle. Surfs are built like tanks. A 40 quid second hand motor for the rear window and a ~60 quid set of springs (too tired to look up the price on milners) are not exactly big financial hits on a vehicle of this age and right now parts are dirt cheap and plentiful thanks to the breakers on this site.

Best to put a surf in storage now and see how it compares to your nitro in 15 years time.

Suppose your quite right on that one. Don't have a Nitro and wouldn't have one unless they were sub £5k. I know our Surfs are built like tanks, that's why I own one

Mine has been a money pit for the last month or so but I fully expected this when buying it. Most of the money has gone on non-essential "improvements" anyway. On a happier note, I traced my rear window problem to a damp wiring connector block next to the relay in the rear quarter. All this freezing weather is causing rapid condensation when the interior cools down. I'll get it dried out this weekend, damp proof the cavity and bung a couple of bags of silica gel crystals in there.

Damn I got a bit confused there and thought it was you who had the nitro - my apologies

Just had a little read up on the nitro & some sites give it 9/10, others 5/10 & one site gave it 2/10.

Funny thing is i may be changing my surf for an L/C or a patrol & the reviews on them are as vaired as the dodge.

Just for the record, im not keen on the nitro but if we all liked the same thing it would be a pretty dull world.

                          Happy motoring.

They've started bringing them into the UK have they? Had one as a hire car in Dallas about 5 years ago. Seemed OK as a reasonable sized car, but I do say its freakishly ugly! Chris, you're mental!
