Link does not work. My transmission oil is about 5 years old or has done 32000 miles so I assume it may be time to change it. Got to change the oil also and probably use 10w 40 although the bonnet has it marked as 5w 30. Milners do a kit for £29 for 10w 40 or £46 for 5w 30!

I used Comma Multivehicle ATF in mine. Its Dexron II, III and Mercon V compatible. You can't even feel the gear changes now, and I'm 100% serious when I say that, it made a huge difference.
I knew my AT oil was at the correct level to start with so I drained it into a bucket with level marks on the side so that I knew how much came out. I got 4 litres of fluid out of the sump and it was dark brown, completely the wrong colour. It should be pink.
I bought an orange funnel with a flexi hose attached to it from Halfords, fits into the ATF dipstick tube perfectly. I put 4 litres of new fluid into this and hey presto, job done.
Coming from owning Lexus LS400s, I change the ATF in the sump at every service so mine gets done every 5000 miles at the most (You do the gearbox filter on an LS400 too but no need on the Surf). If you use this method, you can be sure that your ATF is being kept nice and clean. There is no need to remove the sump and clean the strainer if you are changing the fluid in the gearbox sump this often. You won't get all of the fluid out of the box in this way, there will be 5 to 6 litres left in the torque convertor but it'll always be clean as its being refreshed frequently.
A 5 litre can will do 1 fluid change. I only used the MV ATF as I had it in my garage. If you fancy it, you can get it here for £26 delivered:

If not, this stuff meets Dexron II and is perfectly acceptable for the Surf at £17 for 5 litres delivered:

Easy way to get the right amount back in -
Buy 2 cheap buckets.
Drain old atf into 1 bucket. When it's drained put drain plug back in and get something longish. I use a length of metal bar.
Put bar in bucket and mark the depth of the old oil on it.
Put bar in second bucket and pour in new atf up to the marked level.
Pour new stuff into dipstick tube with a funnel.
Should end up perfect as long as you had the right amount in to start with.
Rob.
