A Towing Question. Whats Legal?

last time i enquired about hiring a trailor to transport another surf the salesman said to me that by law you can only tow 1 and a half times the weight of the car doing the towing.
this meant that technically i cant even tow a surf using another surf because the weight of the trailor puts me just over the legal limit?
is this true? surely not.
if this is true then what a load of rubbish. who made that law!?

You can tow anything provided the total weight is below your vehicles max train weight (Might be a bit slow though). Your only problem might be establishing the max train weight for the Surf ....

sorry i must have got something mixed up. but i remember him saying on the phone that i couldnt tow another surf with my surf because with the trailor, i would be over weight?
i find it hard to believe that one cant tow the same car on a trailor!?
does anyone know the legal limit of what you can tow with a surf.

does anyone know "for definate" what the LEGAL limit is for the surfs?
to say the surf is only suitable to tow, say a mondeo escort is rediculous.

The 85% is a RECOMMENDATION from the Caravan Club for new/inexperienced caravanners and has no legal standing

so is there not a general rule of thumb law about towing? something like.....you cant tow any more weight that the car doing the towing? or something like that.

I think it's a right can of worms because of the lack of info. stamped on the VIN plate, I wonder what a keen copper would make of it?

I have just the same problem with my pickup and the weight I can legally carry in the back also?
