Most of the things i'd like to do to my truck seem to start with a lift.
For 500 i could do a 2" body lift and 3" sussy lift.
Gotta say i'd start there.

Locker and some half decent mud tyres, you will need a shade more than 500 to do this.
Traction is everything offroad, articulation is fine but you should only lift as little as you can and as much as you need.
