Just got one of these from a junk shop for the princely sum of a tenner. Fairly basic but fun nonetheless.

    Its got FM/LW/MW/SW2/MB/SW1/FM/AIR

Just tuned in to Radio Taiwan International which is oddly compelling mainly because at times it sounds like a something that would be playing in the background of some post-apocalyptic film.

    Just thought I would share...

p.s. for 'buffs' in the title read 'nerds'. But in a good way of course

I'm sure it will bring you loads of pleasure too!

I like sitting in the loft study on a dark and wet night listening to voices from the other side of the world, the occasional transatlantic flight checking in, morse code drifting in and out etc.

Or, listening to the PMR bands which provide a more immediate window on the world.

String up a longwire antenna outside for your SW stuff, you'll be amazed at whats out there. There is something magical about radio which has been lost with modern instant communication such as internet and texts etc. Hearin voices coming through the crackles and whistles of real radio ties it all to the history of communication I suppose.

You'll be after a scanner next, believe me!

        Andy?

'tis true. Its reminded me of the old CB days and almost odd to be listening to something you can't interact with and can suddenly disappear

Love it. The real geeks can be referred to as Andy's. That's even better than Billy No Mates.

Nice thought but doubtful I'm afraid.
Statistics show that nerds have the breeding proclivity of Giant Pandas.

                    Chavs however, spawn like amoeba.

                      Here's my 'stuff'

Left to right : AOR1000 modified for discriminator output for data transmissions such as ACARS, GRE PSR295 (my day to day hand held), old laptop for displaying data (the left window) and controlling my Bearcat UBC780XLT scanner (top of the pile to the right) which can log what it finds to a file, next one down is a Realistic 2042 1000 channel scanner (I got it for a fiver, yes, a fiver!) and bottom is my Realistic DX394 general comms receiver (from SW right through to LW)

Two home made antennas I'm playing with. A 430MHz-470MHz log periodic on the left, and a 465MHz 11dBi Yagi on the right. Both pointed at worcester just to get an idea of their performance before I think about putting them on the mast!

Sorry but the nerds will inherit nothing - they'll just end up as pets for the money men

The chavs will inherit the scraps from the table (If there's any justice)

And the rest of us will just have to keep slaving away

Life is too important to take seriously !

Looking at that antenna securing method for testing purposes, I have a little mount here that you may find handy for securing those antennas whilst testing/playing. I'll take a pic of it tomorrow for you. No idea what it's off, (or even for, other than it being for an inch or so mast), but looks like it might suit you down to the ground for using inside.

Blimey Andy, you don't mess about do you?

Homer appears horrified that antenna no. 1 is making a break for it.

(Honesty note: I typed 'aerial' then swiftly deleted and replaced with 'antenna' as I knew one of you two would come over all Albannach about it )
