gear box truble

Possibly a faulty ECU or dry joint in the circuit board or maybe just bad connection at the plugs.
Try unplugging the ECU plugs and re-inserting them.
I read somewhere a few months back that water had been dripping onto the ECU plugs in someones Surf/4Runner and caused all sorts of intermitant malfunctions. They replaced loads of sensors until it was discovered.

where is the ecu on it as i dont have a clue

thanks for that its goin in to my local garage rye motors i gave then the print out to help them fix my beast will let you no wot happens ,,,,iceman

beast haz been in the garage and thay had no joy thay could not get it to do the flash code and thay even had a autoelectrien lookin at it and even he woz gettin ####ed off with it,, thay allso took off all the sensers off and cleaned them , seemed all right wen i picked it up but my boss has had it all day and he sed its been playin up and the lights been on and off as much as a slappers nickers this surf is doin my head in now help help

All you need is a paperclip, straighten it out and poke it into the terminals as shown in the diagram, make sure the overdrive button is off, switch on ignition and count how many times the O/D light flashes.
It will flash a number of times, then go off for a couple of seconds and flash another number of times. Just make a note of the first amount off flashes then after the pause, the second amount of flashes. The two numbers you have will be the fault code. Just look at the codes list to see what you have.
It'll save you loads of cash/time and we'll take it from there.

just printed the autodiagnosis off and its complett blar blar to me so will pass it on to my local garage to look at or to my local automatic box repair centre but i must just prepare my self for a long painfull prosess and £££££££££ i expett but wen i get to the bottom off this i will let the world no ha ha

not that simple been to 4 places and toyota and even steveo at the engin com at stokport ,carnt help the eng check light is not on just the o/d light but as its old its the gear box ecu not the cars ecu .. its realy doin my head in now as no one haz had this prob b4 , cos dont want to fork out 4 a new box if its just a senser or a dodgy plug or pipe

Was it serviced by a reputable company/person ?

It's not that simple to replace all the ATF in a Surf - for the sake of 5 minutes of your time check the ATF level and condition. If you're not familiar with the EXACT procedure do a search on the forum

think so my dad got it done wen he got it and its had new oil in since and its been checked like u sed ,thourgh the box but still playin up ,, my dad haz sold me a dud

As others have said, check the fluid level.

Make sure that the engine and gearbox are up to temperature and then with the handbrake on and your foot on the foot brake move the gear lever slowly back and forth through the different positions. Then put it in Park with the engine still running and get out and check the Hot level mark.

wen you stop it pops out and wont select first drop in to low to set off and then bak to drive its fine till next time but if you just try setting off its like its in third , then the o/d light starts flashilg
