  • :( my truck is ill

Well i have finaly been struck by the curse of the 2.4 ................
It boiled up on me yesterday and spat the water out as a jet of high pressure steam !!!!!!! took it back to the dealer today on the advice of Smurf and citizens advice and although he moaned and said it had been abused off road he was very quick to offer to take the truck in and find and sort the problem, but i may have to pay the labour costs for the repairs

Abused off road????? It looked to me that you had been (reasonably) sensible on Sunday. Did you tell him that they are designed for terrain other than tarmac. Doesn't the warranty cover parts and labour?

Good luck with getting it repaired.
    It's only a hobby!

        Hi Lickit
Were you the pleasant young man fitting nice new wheels and tyres to your
truck on Sunday. I have just been through the expense of a new head
and all the bits which have to go with it. It is taking a little time to regain confidence in the old girl now. Good luck with the repair.

yes that was me with the wheels, the guy reckons that they will pay for parts but i may have to pay the labour they are going to keep the truck over the weekend and have a look on tuesday but i think its the head as the top hose from the rad was about to bursting point when i got to him and his mate tried to say the water was coming from the bottom hose when you could see it pumping out the over flow from the expansion tank. but as i say they were very quick to aggree to fix it for me so i think they know aswell as me that its the head cracked, the worst thing was he has a realy nice looking blue surf there now lol

hehe he will have a hard job fobbing me off with a tail like that since i spent 3 years training as a car mech and about a year and a half working on diesel lorry engines, also since the only part of the cooling sys down that low is the pipes for the rear heater that rules out off road damage and the plate will channel the air flow over ther auto box and the heater pipes the motor should be running cooler than before. will have to see what he has to say on tuesday when i ring him

                      update on my truck

Rang the dealer today to see what was going on with my truck and was told that he hasn't found anything wrong with it atall even after testing the head the cooling sys and all the normal stuff, so he recons could have been a big air lock hideing in the sys so he has bleed the sys through. going to pick it back up tommorow afternoon and see what he has done to it as i am wondering if he has found something he should have done before selling it to me and has fixed it and dont want me to find out after i told him i had been to citizens advice

When I bought mine I thought the head had gone.

It hadn't it was the radiatior.

The radiator was knackered and the engine overheated, the boiling water in the system gave the same sort of symptoms as a pressurised engine.
E.g. Overheated and when you take the cap off steam shoots out and you swear.

                          This was fixed.

Then it happened again, I thought it was the head.
But no, it was the cooling system again, but some of the pipes.

He replaced all the pipes and stuff and it's been fine since.

He replaced the thermostat (radiator cap thingy) too, because this may have helped cause the problem.

I'm no scientist or mechanic, but if your radiator hoses are old and a bit perished they might not leak water/steam until they get hot.
And when they lak thereis less cooling in the engine so it gets hotter.
                          And so on.

Some go, some dont. There was a poorly designed head on some 2.4's which cracks easily if the car overheats for any reason. Once replaced with a NEW (not reconditioned) head problems rarely reoccur.

Don't get paranoid - rememeber people ask for help on here when something goes wrong. The hundreds of members with 2.4's with no problem dont need to post about them being fine!!
