Not sure why you think they're wired in series. I would guess its simply a 12v feed, and the return is through the roof bar / roof. Might mean taking a bit of paint off the roof somewhere though...
From an aesthetic point of view, I prefer them close to the roof, and its a bit of an advantage too because the roof stops light spill onto the bonnet.Cutting steps in the roof of the world

I used some 2" aluminium angle bolted to the front of the bar, and the lights slung underneath that. It worked out that the lights were fitted with the mount upwards, around the same height as the top surface of the bar with about 10-20mm clearance to the roof.Cutting steps in the roof of the world
