an associate of mine, with no tinterweb, has lost backwards gear in his grand cherokee. i said i would ask you kind chaps on here for some advice...............before ya start, sensible advice please

one day he had it, the next it was awol, no drama, no noises, just no reverse. drives fine forwards. its a 98 4.0l orvis grand cherokee.

help the guy if you can, he is a really nice guy. do owt fer anybody he will, but gets ripped off a lot coz of his nice nature i know, i know, i'm boring you now.

A Jeep forum would be a better place to ask. Is it auto or manual?

its auto mate. yu, i agree, a jeep forum would be best, and i have posted on one. but in general i dont find any 4x4 forum as good as this one, and when i get paid i will pay my subs and stay here, some one on here will have the knowledge to make at least a basic diagnosis, like burnt it or something like that naw, just thought i would ask, as there is a good knowledge base here.

Hiroler's suggestion should be your first port of call. Check that the fluid level is correct and that the fluid is cherry red in colour.

Other than that, it looks like your mate has made the number 3 position on the list of weird gearbox faults this week.

Only other thing which you could check without it being a proper mechanic type affair would be any electrical connections on the box, and see if any are corroded or full of crap etc.
