Hi all,
got a relative in the Republic of Ireland, wants to clarify his position if he imports a surf from the UK, can he tax it as a commercial vehicle or would it be classed as a private? Guess this is more of a questions for our members in the republic. Cheers.

I dont think it can be classed as a commercial as it has 5 seats and cannot carry a 1 ton payload.I am not sure if the law has changed since I left Dublin as i tried it with a land cruiser and they just sniggered and said "nice try"!!!The other option is to take the back seats out and get it reclassed as a commercial but by the time your relative pays import duty,re-registers gets an NCT cert they will be better off buying a 04 hilux pickup!!

hey murph i have just done this,

bought surf in holyhead, have it here, to class it as commercial you need to remove rear seats / seatbelts and weld over bolt holes, rear windows need to be blocked upi think the girl said with metal, and you need to present it at VRT office, for me it works out cheaper as it is even taking into account the E800+ the road tax is... as insurance would be 1500 as opposed to my 600 it is now....

where you heading??? i am in south west dublin....

its about €850 a year i think for up to 2499cc, above is near on a grand, 3500cc and above if i am correct is 1500, i wanted an m3 when i bought surf but couldnt justify spend 1/4 of the value of the car every year on road tax

I'm heading to just outside of Swords to me ma's for a week or so to do the usual xmas thing and break the speed limit a few times!! It amazes me how the Irish gov can justify that sort of money on road tax when the roads are shite and ye still have to pay on the M50 car park "motorway".Not to mention the fact that the celtic tiger has well and truly left the building!

How are you getting away with yellow reg ?or have you just imported it!??I suppose you could swindle it if you had insurance in the UK so you wouldnt need to pay anything unless the Gardai pulled you in and did some"IS THIS YOUR VEHICLE SIR" lol

its got my irish insurance on it and have it on the road here since 28th of august, i think the gardai are after the expensive yellow regs like mercs bm's and Range rovers :P

Robbiecar imported from bonnie Scotland a few years back, he was registering in Kildare so not sure if he had to weld over the seatbelt holes, bit extreme that, is that so theres no going back coz why would that be a problem, he did have to cover the windows alright, he got covers tacked over the glass to pass the regs but i think they came off soon after.

just got back home from being over there. Me brother in law loves the surf. Wants one to move his one man band equipment around & is impressed with the room when the back seats are down, he says he be'd able to fit d 'ouse & all.
Also, he does deer hunting, & the surf would be able go a bit deeper in the woods. Feck, if he'd drop the back window he'd be able to shoot in comfort.
Made a few other enquires, & the answers are confusing. So I gotta go back in December anyway, so wot I'm gonna do is go & meet customs & make out I thinking about moving over & could they please furnish me with some info. But knowing them as I do bet the answers will be can we screw you & then screw you some more..............

Yes he can tax it as a commercial vehicle if he changes it to comply with commercial vehicle status.
Its the VRT is the problem, the laws in place regarding this tax are very cunning & designed to afflict the maximum cost to anyone looking to import anything other than a van.
I think commercial vehicles & certain pickup trucks (nissan navara/hilux pickup/mitsu L200) only require a 50euro import fee.

thing is, way back in '94, I imported a Serria. They wanted £406 from me to bring it through. Told them they could have it for that as they valued the car at £2000. They dropped it when I proved reseidency in the uk for the previous 2 years. In 2000, when things weren't working out, I moved back to the uk bringing a opel corsa with me. The customs didn't want anything from even though I didn't own the car. Zlich, nothing. Didn't care if I sold it on, which I did. I think, the Irish government can only charge the difference between the 2 countries different vat rates. Which would be considerably lower. Seems to me they only think of reasons to which they can slap you with. Leagalize robbery I think is the term.

Yup vrt is theft. Basically its in place to support the car dealers over here & prevent the local population from going up north or across the channel to England to pick up bargains.
It truly sickens me, as i have often been tempted by various cars in the uk but then find the respective vrt costs outrageously high.
My current car (my surf) makes me smile all the more coz it only costs 280euros a year to tax as its commercial ...even though it has all the luxuries of a flash car!!!hahaha
I also qualify for commercial insurance which is pretty cheap as well.

So much for the single european market, the maastricht treaty the irish signed up to. It was meant to mean, tho I think most punters thought it would mean, you could cross the boarder, buy the car & bring it back without any additional duties.
While I was back at home I showed this website to my cuz. He was pretty impressed. He looked at the recent surf's that was for sale here.
Comparing the prices, you would still make a saving crossing the boarder & bringing it back. Dare say there could be a nice sideline there if one was prepared to do the paperwork. I reckon you'd get €500-€1000 per vehicle. An advantage would be it getting thru as a commercial.
What did you have do to get it thru as a commercial vehicle? e.g., did you have to rip out the back seats? seal up the seat belts bolts & cover the rear windows? Did you dumb down the wheels or does that not matter if your getting it thru as a commerical? Appreciate any help.
