  • Pulling to left

As the title says, my vehicle a 1997 3.0 Surf is pulling to the left when braking, not severely but it is noticable. Is this a minor or major problem and if I cannot do it myself, what should I expect to pay to rectify the problem? thanks.

i would say you have a sticking piston in the brake caliper.see stormforce in the breaker section he might have a second hand one.

Aren't the discs bigger though? I thought the calipers were different thats why 3rd gens can't run 15" wheels.

I'll have to measure both mine tomorrow.

FYI 2nd gen calipers are in front and 3rd gens are mounted behind the front axle.

mmmmmmm, well i have first gen calipers on my second gen,and they fitted no probs.your quite right about the 3rd gen being bigger but it shouldnt make any difference if they are fitted in front or behind the axle, just swap n/s caliper for an o/s caliper and vice a versa.

3rd gen calipers are bigger and are from Landcruiser 90 . I know I just bought some used ones to correct the same fault as in thread title ..

As per "I would say you have a sticking piston in the brake caliper."

I am not sure if the brake fluid was changed on the last service. Would this have caused the problem. It has done about 8000 miles since it last big service which was 18 months ago or about 3000 since the interim service.

Is it a reasonably easy job as I do not really want to mess with brakes and have total failure. Straight forward changing of discs I have done before although in general I am not mechanically minded.

i did mine off side one last week as had the same problem with it pulling to the left. not a problem just 2 bolts and remove the pipe brakes will need bleeding after. I need to do the other side as it pulls to the right now prob due to the new caliper being more efficient than the old one!

If I am unable to do it myself, as I am on Statutory Sick Pay at present, approximately how much will it cost. Probably get both checked at the same time. The wife will be taking it in so don't want them ripping her off.

each caliper is £60ish for the refurb £140 for new best to do both sides at the same time. i didnt and now it pulls the other way so will be getting the other one sorted now! pads are about £20 a set. You cold look for a second hand caliper for £30 approx.

Thanks. I would have thought it would need doing at 83000 miles and mostly on road. I guess I will ask for an estimate first before they do any work as a bit broke at present.

I had a similar problem with my surf pulling to the left on braking but it turned out to be badly worn wishbone bushes,
                          The brakes were perfect!!

BTW if I crawled under the truck where would I see these? Remember I am no mechanic so go easy.

                              Hi guys,

What about the cheap way, check you tyre pressures
are all OK. 2 or 3 psi can make a difference. don't forget
that a rear brake fault can also cause pulling to one side
as well. Mine's got 170000k on and the calipers are fine.
                              Hope this helps.

                              Gman.
If it aint broke, keep goin' till it is.
