dont believe the hype,no more on parts than yr vectra, main worry is head gasket,3.0td is least of a worry as for which gen, thats personal choice,if yr worried about parts get 2nd gen 3.0td as stormy on here breaks them for a living and posts,3rd gen is nicer, but more plastic, and few breakers

go for the 3rd gen if your not planning on taking it off road. they are more modern inside and some people thing they are "prettier". usually come with good paintjobs too as they are a bit newer.

And for a non-rose-tinted specs version...
Only fair to tell you that it WILL cost more to run than a Vectra. Try 22-23mpg for size, less if you are just running round town, perhaps a couple more on a long steady run. Dont believe people / dealers who tell you you'll get 35mpg, it's b0llocks plain and simple.
Also, buy as new a Surf as you can afford. They are Toyota so are all pretty reliable, but they DO break and need parts and the older ones do this more frequently. Parts prices are comparable in price to any other car of similar age really.Cutting steps in the roof of the world
