Thanks for the link Bogus, and thank you albannach for your smart arse comment, very helpful of you
Just out of interest, out of your 64 posts, have you used the search button? I'm only asking because Mr Grumpy Pants has a point, that if one person can answer your thread by using it, why can't you?
It's not that we're all grumpy and unhelpful, but FFS - it's less typing too....
and if you have to ask how to get the stereo out of a 3 gen then you are proberly the wrong person to carryout the job, its one of the easiest jobs on a 3gen next to putting fuel in it.
Because I'm nice, and searched for my own thread using the terms 3rd gen and stereo in the search field.....
Remove the heater control knobs (put in safe place)
Remove heater control fascia
Undo (as you are looking at it) lower left and upper right screws
Then remove the trim panel that covers the handbrake and houses the rear mirror/suspension switches - you will need to open the arm rest to do this.
Pull up the one by the gear/transfer levers and turn 90 degrees
Then you can pull the main dash fascia out of the way - as you do this, disconnect the cig socket, the light on the ash tray, clock and one of the controls (I think it's the rear window one) not the other - it's just easier to remember what goes where if you only disconnect those bits.
Then, you can use the red button - you'll need to apply the handbrake of course, but move the gear lever back enough so you can get the radio out.
Undo the four screws the hold the brackets into the car, remove radio.
I had a simple job of disconnecting one, and reconnecting the other, but you may find depending on what you are putting in that you need a wiring kit - Halfrauds are good for these.
To replace the trim, just repeat the above steps in reverse.
I'm sorry if I come off a complete tw@t, but why is there a shirty attitude towards a newish member? The only outcome I can see is that the OP will go off and say how hostile the Surf forum members are. I can't see that being good in any way.
May be he should of used the search button. May be he did and still couldn't find the info. Just my 2p's worth. (Not toupee)

It think it's that every forum I've used has a big load of guff when you join about using the search before posting questions, it's just good forum etiquette..and yes, maybe we have sounded off at new members once or twice, and maybe the seach function isn't great, but it does work and typing in 3rd gen stereo gave me the results about replacing a 3rd gen stereo, so that didn't need to be too intuitive to find. I've used it a lot and either got what I wanted straight away, or changed the search string then got what I needed, or sometimes just had to ask as the answers given weren't what I needed.
Anyway, sorry if I came across as shirty, but I did then followup with the information I wrote about how to do it, and he's buggered off anyway, maybe he's still out trying to pull the stereo out from the dash...
If I had access to a forum like this in the early 90s, I probably wouldn't have spent an our trying to work out how to change the stereo in my old Celica....similar principle to a 2nd gen...
