My thought process went something like

      '4x4s are cool
Shame I have no real reason for one
I love the thought of something which can go any where
      Damn they're expensive to run
      Mmmm.. they look pretty
      God they're thirsty
My car keeps getting stuck in the mud at clay shoots, how annoying
I can't justify their gas guzzling nature, I'm an environmentalist dammit!
      Gosh arent they practical
But they cost the earth (and the cost The Earth. Man.)
What? I can get one for the same amount I could sell my car for?
      Shame about the fuel consumption
      they are pretty though
But my car gets about double to the gallon than a Surf.
If only I could run one without the environmental impact
If only I could run one as cheaply as my hatchback
Whats that, they can run on veg oil?
      Hmmmm... veg oil you say...
      SURF PLEASE!'

      Mmmm... Surfing goodness.

as a lot of you know,i bough my first surf some years ago,as i was looking for a project vehicle and the surf ticked all the boxes.then a few years later emerged stein and ive never looked back ive had about 6 surfs in my time here and im currently running the 2.8 that has over 300,000k on the clock and still going strong and never given me an ounce of hassle.even when abused on the plains.

Each time I have pulled alongside another Surf at the lights... I have left them behind with ease.... and I’m sure they weren’t all those incredibly slow 2.4’s

you may end up changing your mind about acceleration et al

Who cares???? If you are that interested in BHP and 0-60 times, why the hell did you by a more than decade old 2.25 tonne 4x4? Surely a Range Rover Sport, or BMW X6 would be a better investment to see if you can leave other people at the lights....

It does make me laugh all this talk about performance from a Surf - the only performance I want from mine is that it goes where I point it, and brings me home again - it's a heavy, slow old truck and that's the way I like it...

I was looking for a 4x4, preferably with an automatic gearbox. I didn't like the Pajero much and a friend happened to know of a cheap Surf.

(Andrew) as MudSurfer.. No - the cross member is too thin - the helicoils would have just fallen out...its only about 3 mm, then big gap then another 3mm...no good

It will probably be a 4.5 Petrol... And no ,I’ll not be expecting much in the way of acceleration.

Because I’ve always liked Toyotas. I’ve had Land Rovers and swore that I’d never buy one again. BMW X6 is boring soft roader.
Anyhow, by now you should know I’m only having a bit of fun when I go on about the V6... got to justify 16 mpg somehow
I’ll probably be gone from here next month come MOT time.

You may have just once or twice I think

                              Shame I have the winch

Ive had my old girl for 10 years now (got her in august 1999)so far she has been;used & abused put in some realy nasty places, and pulled out of some even worse places, covered in mud more than a few times, flooded in side up to the gear bottom of the gearstick, had water through the engine, had tooooo much oil put in and blew the camshaft top seal (ask koi, vagrant, jotto and anyone else who was at avalanche that year),driven round the M25 with no coolant in (that wasnt me my m8 borrowed it and didnt check the coolant level).
Now she has a 3lt (was a 2.4) a campack soft top and most recently a respray.
As to why I got her in the first place.....Well.. apart from looking the dogs dangly bits you cant find a more versatile or tough vehicle in the maket place that can be used as an everyday vehicle, then take it offroad and have a brilliant days fun.
And just to put the icing on the cake she just passed her 10th mot with flying colours.
