  • mixing my lift.

barry @ RT has just told me that they can supply the desert fox kit untill late october because they are out of stock of the rear shocks to complete the kit.
so i was thinking, if i just bought all the rest of the +2" kit (the front basically) and just bought the LC springs and shocks to make up the back...would that be fine?
ill have a slightly higher lift on the back but that shouldnt be a prob if i left it like that would it?
at least untill i put some ball joint spacers on the front?
nothing wrong with that is there guys?

no need to do anything at the front apart from wind the torsion bars.

My current truck has still got original shocks at the front. (with a torsion wind)

you better check out the price first as i asked barry for the same kit and got the same answer as you he said he would work out a price for half the kit and never ever came back to me

yeah true but i had made my mind up that i wanted to buy all new parts and i prefered the idea of just fitting +2 torsion bars as opposed to winding the originals up. this way i can wind them up even further if i choose to at some point down the line.

          same here!
but i can work out the rough price just by looking on the site anyway as if i was going to buy everything seperate.

I was under the impression ball joint spacers for the lift so your cvs are not stressed and you wont have to adjust your torsion bars and you can keep them stock if you like its also cheeper than buying tbars popeyes suggestion check out the thread problem with torsion bars i posted a few days ago and if you want a cheapo power boost try blocking off your egr

I think BJ spacers still put stress on the CV unless you install diff drop blocks however that gives you no more ground clearance for off road use.

I think you can go up 2" with out stressing the CV to much. you could always install free wheeling hubs to save on CV boots!!

Big lift on the front tends to shred CV boots as they are pinched by the bearings as they rotate. Speaking as one who knows...

I have now dropped the front an inch or so from it's 4" taller position. Makes for better ride, better articulation, longer lasting boots and CVs...

There's no such thing as a +2 torsion bar. The uprated ones are simply a stiffer bar and still need winding up to gain lift. 99.99% of Surfs don't need them. There's no need for the stiffer bars unless you have a lot of weight on the front such as a heavy steel bullbar and winch. The majority of the Aussies with Surfs stick to the standard torsion bars.

Agree with Nev. Stick with the standard ones, and fit some BJ spacers to give you a lift whilst maintaining ride quality and flex. Wind them up too much and the front gets way too stiff for offroad.

                      hello mate.
well that was the impression i got from Roughtraxs website. they said it would give the surf a 2" lift. they include these bars in their "lift kit"....

and as my mate who will be helping me fit all the bits has told me that he doesnt want to wind the torsion bars up because he is unsure as to how and therefore a bit hesitant, i thought that just replacing them with these "+2" bars would be an easier option. my mate said that i should really have someone who knows a thing or two about torsion bars to wind them up and i dont know anyone. apart from taking it to a garage obviously. sod that.
i have free-wheeling hubs already and i was planning on putting some BJ spacers on soon after the lift anyway.

so your saying these bars Dont lift? and that they are just Stronger?

great now im confused and back to square 1 again.

i dont know enough about the mechanics of it all to get a decent picture of it in my head. im sure once i do the work all will be clear but thats only untill After i do the work obviously lol.
id be happy to pay someone i know on here to give me a hand fitting it all and pay them but there isnt really anyone i dont think near me?

Jay the torsion bars are uprated for a +2" lift. They can be a bit of a sod to fit then you just have to wind them up as you would the normal ones to the desired ride height

oh so as Nev said then, they are just more stiffer to suit the lift. i see.
                          damn lol.
the thing i cant get my head round is winding the torsion bars "up"?
arent they horizontal? so how can you wind them "up"? i take it they extend in length but as they are horizontal how does it "lift"?? sorry for such a noob question but its just something i cant get to grips with lol.

                              cheers for that mate.
so basically its the lever at the end that raises the truck then? as you wind the torsion bar, the lever at the end rotates and lifts whatever is sitting on it kind of thing? i.e axel or whatever?
