sweet. so this would blatenly be the best way for me to go then if i wana bolt on a bigger rack. basically the same as yours....just longer.
now i just need someone to tell me if there is a decent fixing point at the front end of the surf next to the sunroof. save me taking the liner down only to realise i cant

any help and ideas would be great guys as im off fishing for a week in France in 5 weeks and i REALLY dont want to take the Transit!
(im taking the transit as there are 3 of us going and im taking all 3 peoples gear in my transits as it wont all fit in the surf........well i think it will but my mate is being a girl and saying no because we have to book the Euro tunnel this week and if it turns out we cant get all of out gear in the surf we are all fcuked because we have a surf booked on the train and not a Van! lol)
Even with a roof rack unless your all packing light, u wont get 3 people + 3 sets of gear in aswell...
I have some freinds who also go down france and they have a merc-vito van and they still have to take a trailer lol

yes thats right. carp and poss the odd cat.
but i like a challenge! i love my surf and in my eyes there is nothing she cant do. ive had all my gear and my mates gear in there before. it was full to the brim but she did it!
i was hoping that with a decent size rack like the ones from that link i posted would be just enough to put my other mates gear on the roof.
seriously you have no idea how much i dont want to drive around france in my transit!!!!!!!!!! no mod cons, will only do 70/75mph and it blimming hurts your leg/foot after about 20 minutes constant motorway driving! and in totall its about 4/5 hour drive! theres nothing wrong with the van (she is mint), but she is just a pig for long haul journeys.
MUCH rather do it in the surf!!

yeah but its a lot more on the euro-tunnel to take a trailer.
it will cost more in fuel in the surf but the surfwill cost about the £50 less than the van on the train over there so it weighs up nicely.
just a question if i can get the rack i want and as we are booking the train this friday i have to make a decision ASAP!! aahhhh!!

If you fit a long rack, just aim to get six mounting points. There is certainly at least one more stiffener forward of the ones I used. If there's strength in the rack structure, its less important that there's strength in the forward roof as its the rack that's the structural bit.
As far as space goes, there was 3 of us in my truck, 3 lots of clothes, two tents, chairs, cooking gear etc etc for two weeks. If the fishing gear is on the roof, there's plenty of room.Cutting steps in the roof of the world
