They used to be when the truck in question was used
not for hire or reward. So for example a coach company I used to work for in Eastbourne had it's own recovery wagon and as long as it was used solely to recover company vehicles it required no mot
As for commercial stuff no doubt BDT will be along shortly
I used to have an old Ford A series beaver tail that was exempt, only cos it had an a frame on the back that classed it as a crane, but that was about 15 years ago.
yep has to be a crane, like a spec, not a flat bed , but there is ways around it, but if your running a recovery outfit without mots or checks vospa will be on yer and if your truck is not up to speck you will get a gv9 not to be moved
It has to be a spectacle/crane lift and not a low loader, so can't be used for any other purpose.
If it won't pass an MoT it shouldn't be on the road.
You'd still have to give it documented 6 weeklies. Which are as in depth as an MoT so you just as well get a ticket on it.
And with VOSA cruising every mile of motorway these days there is little chance an anpr camera won't pick it up and you get a tug.
They give GV9s out for the smallest thing, and I've known 'em to demand a full retest only 4 weeks after it had passed it's MOT when all they've found is a broken mirror, and that could easily have just happened.
