  • identity fraud protection cover... huh?

just got off the phone to my credit card co. for a general enquiry, and before they would let me go they needed to tell me about this great thing called "identity fraud protection cover"

    i said no thanks...

she went on to say that if anyone should steal my identity then i would be completely liable for all costs unless i had this protection cover.

i kindly explained, that i would not be liable for any costs should someone gain money from an organisation by deceipt unless it is down to my negligance or misuse of card etc. i also said that if someone had managed to gain money by fraud then this is the responsibility and fault of the company that handed over the money since its their fault for not completing the necessary checks to make sure that person really was who they said they was.

sounds like they are wanting us to pay their insurance?
    Oh Nana, what's my name?

I was on the phone to one the other day, they asked if I wanted to take out some lost card cover, said it would cover all my cards even those with other banks. So I asked what that meant, what sort of cover and they said if you lose your cards ring us and we will tell you other card companies. Good idea I said, I'd forgotten that I only get one phone call when my wallet goes missing . . .

Best protection is to always know what's on your cards to ensure you don't get a surprise when the statement comes in. I check online regularly and found three purchases from I-Tunes showing on my card over this weekend. Contacted the bank on Sunday by e-mail and got a call from them yesterday to sort it and set the Police onto whoever seems to have got hold of my card number. Bank as good as gold and refunded my account and also cancelled the card account immediately and will send me a new card on a new account next week.

The most annoying thing is I rarely use the card for anything other than secure online purchases, so not sure how anybody could have got hold of the card number or the three digit code to allow them to make online purchases. But the best bit is whoever bought the I-Tunes songs will have left an e-mail trace, so the Police should hopefully be able to catch them quite quickly.
