[QUOTE=Apache;560556]OK then. Lets close our borders. Lets stop 'Johnny Foreigner' coming in and 'taking British Jobs'.

Right. Who are we going to get to do the low paid work in the UK? Who's gonna pick the fruit, clean the hotel rooms etc. Right you scrounging benefits tw@ts, its you!

                QUOTE]

Hey I just had a really good idea....... why dont we put the minimum wage up to a rate that people could actually live on and then, we would'nt have to employ 'foreign workers' .

I have a better idea. Long term unemployed who are fit for work do these jobs FOR their dole plus 10%.

Why the hell should they get paid for sitting on their ar5es?

Great. Why don't we just make all U.K businesses totally unviable from an economic standpoint. That's a great plan mate. Aye, just put wages up so that even more people become unemployed as companies lay off staff or go bust. That's genius in motion, that is.

If the foreign workers can survive in this country on a basic minimum wage, does that not begin to show what the problem may be with our own? They expect and want too much is the simple answer.

It's just the meaning of the 4 S's on the Serbian flag,
                      It's nothing sinister.
Except the letter S in Cyrillic is C

Hmmm, I was actually being sarcastic in my statement, guess that didnt quite come over in the text.
A couple of things though Matt, dont you think that the people who run businesses are actually overpaid, for example Willie Walsh, BA director, currently earning 60K a month ! Some of the senior banking staff recently made redundant walked off with, in some cases, millions in pay off's and pensions, which, ultimately you, I and everyone else pays for !
Also, of the ten poles at our place, 8 share a bedsit, sleeping in shifts, I dont think thats a great set up but it is their choice. The true root of this problem lies in the countries that these economic migrants originate from. Surely it would better if Europe or the world helped them so these people didnt feel the need to migrate for better paid work.
I also think that the word you used, "survive", is an interesting one, people dont want to "survive" surely ? They want to prosper, being held back by low wages does not do alot for a person's sense of self worth.

It didn't. Or I completely misconstrued it. It could be either.

In cases like those, yes, the directors and such do deserve a good slapping, especially when they are drawing exorbitant wages whilst laying off staff for cost cutting reasons. They are a world away from small and some medium sized businesses, however, where reality and hard graft are the order of the day for all working there. They are usually the ones who take the brunt of the pain, not the larger conglomerates or corporations.

                          Perfectly valid points.

Surviving is perfectly fine if one is content with ones lot. Besides, all that happens is that as wages rise, so do costs. If people have more spare money to 'play' around with, it just drives costs higher as the greed again sets in with the companies who wish to part them from that cash. It's a vicious circle. We are already in the middle of a backlash from that scenario. It will happen again though, as it always does.

Hmmmm! Seems I am one of the long term unemployed as I have been unable to obtain work for the past 8 months since being made redundant due to the company going into administration. I paid my NI so why shouldn't I claim? Some of us have no choice but to take whatever benefits are offfered just to survive. Maybe because I am close to 60 and have a medical issue employers do not want to know. Luckily today I managed to secure a 6 month temporary contract for work at very poor wages but at least it is an income.

I am a foreigner born in South Africa and descendent from British nationals and our ancestry can be traced back several geneations in Britain. Also a I am a married to a true taffy and was prior to emigrating to Britain. Am I regarded in the same category as a Polish person who is a basicaly an economic immigrant?

You're not in the class of person which was being referred to. It was directed at those who see leaving school and claiming benefits for the rest of their lives as normal. The workshy wonders, glassbacks or whatever you prefer to call them.
