You have an aircraft? Do the experiment yourself then.

What instruments and control would you like, you can see the conveyor moves and you see the aircraft take off in the opposite direction.

You've been told that it will take off, I've given you numerous examples of how the conveyor will have no influence and you've been shown footage done by Mythbusters.

Why do you think it wouldn't take off? You've been given the facts, all you have done is state your opinion. What "fact" or proof do you have?

Having read all the arguements and counter arguements over this question, lord lucan has probably explained this the best. I think that alot of what has been said has been muddled, confusing and mostly wrong.
            Break the problem down.
            1. A jet engine produces thrust to give the plane forward motion.

            2. Its wheels are free rolling, attached to the undercarriage, there simply to keep the belly of the aircraft off the deck.

            3. The thrust generated by the jet is of such immense force it actually pushes against air (behind) to create forward motion, plus it does actually suck air in thus to a lesser degree pulling the aircraft forward.

            4. I am not going to get into a personal attack on anyone, but to be honest this is a bit of a no brainer, if you dont get it then go do a physics class. lol

            5. Can we please have a thread for those who like the BNP ?

You can have a thread for whatever you want, just start it yourself.

                    Are you a physics professor?

The answer depends on how the riddle is interpreted.

I know. Can't let an opportunity to call someone else let it slide though. It occurs so infrequently.

It doesn't if the plane is propellor driven.

                        • Could I please direct you all to posts 212 and 215. Where I generously disproved my origonal theory by the addition of air pressure.

Firstly the conveyor belt does exert a backward force upon the aircraft up until the point that the aircraft defeats gravity (I'm not talking about spinning wheels, I'm saying gravity). Yes the engines provide a forward force, by displacing air. These two forces can equal out until a certain point when the engine thrust displaces enougth air to create a low pressure zone in front of the aircraft, at that point the air is pulled across the wings producing lift.

If I remember the video clip, there is a point just before the air pressure difference comes into effect where the plane appears stationary.
                          Gone from 4x4 to 1x2
