Volvo V70? One of the larger Merc estates? Cheap cos 'supposedly' expensive to run, but having run a Surf, it wont bother you.

Both big enough to swallow camping gear, and good tow cars.

To be honest, if you're in the market for a medium sized saloon then you could do a LOT worse than the Mundano .......

If you don't expect to sell it on then you can pick up a good spec for comparitive peanuts, get cheap motoring out of it for years and the handling is pretty damned good too

I,d go for the Saab 95 estate, if theres not enough room in that get a Transit van. I ran a 95 saloon for about 5 years, the 2.3 lpt and could get 40+ mpg out of it at legalish motorway speeds and by all accounts the diesel is supposed to give even better mpg.
The only problem is servicing is expensive unless you can find a specialist, the main stealers live up to thier title.
The main thing to look for is service history.Main dealer or recognised Saab specialist and make sure no stamps are missing. If it has been serviced by a back street garage or by the owner RUN dont walk away.

On the assumption that running costs were the reason for ditching the Surf and that dosh is influencing the buying decision:

Xantia - VERY expensive when the hydraulics start playing up

Saab 9-5 - Great car but comparitively expensive (Cos it's so good)

Honda - Great car but dealer servicing is more expensive that BMW (Or at least it was the last time I looked)

Volvo - More expensive to run than equivalent cars and dealer servicing steep

Dunno about the Mazda 6

Ford's Rapid Fit setup are much cheaper for servicing than their dealers and the service is exactly the same except there's no courtesy car or pickup/drop off etc

We're talking big estates here are we?

Saab 9-5 would be my choice. Also:

Honda Odyssey (a people carrier, but actually good)
Mitsubishi Galant or Legnum
Mondeo (they're good, but I couldn't live with the cheap Ford feel)
Vauxhall Signum (if you consider a Vectra, a Signum has more room)

If you want more economy, you need a diesel, which is trickier:

Audi A6 Avant
BMW 5 Series Tourer
MG ZT-T / Rover 75 Tourer

saab is a posh vauxhall,i wouldnt buy one.wot bout c class merc estate?5 series bmw diesel estate(they make less money than the 3),if was doing wot u were,id be looking for a honda accord estate,or as said above modeos arent bad,get the tddci,but make sure its got history,they did have gremlins when they came out
