  • To airscoop or to not airscoop.

Hi all, opinions please, because it gets very hot here, upto 50 degrees, so am thinking of fitting an airscoop to the bonnet on my 2.4., has anyone done this or something similer to help with cooling. All ideas and suggestions greatly received.

Hi Surfenstein,Wow, that looks good, i was thinking of a forward facing scoop from a mitsbish, well they have to have some uses., did it make alot of differance cooling wise.

um yes it did, that coupled with a body lift made one hell of a difference to the cooling, plus i was running a v8 in stein,do a search on intercooler mod on here and you will see loads of people have fitted the mits scoop over the intercooler.i think lovely boyo did a write up on it many years ago too.

          If you look here http://www.tlocuk.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4640

you will find a write up of the scoop I fitted to mine.

If you fit a body lift you will also see a cooling effect - more air flows around the transmission tunnel.

          I like this.............

If you want to get hot air out, fit a vent in the top rear of the bonnet, or a rear facing 'scoop'. As hot air is blown off the rad into the engine bay, it currently escapes under the car, what you want to do is release it where its hottest - ie the top of the engine bay. Another way is space the bonnet hinges off a bit so the rear of the bonnet sits proud and allows hot air out.

Thank you lovely Boyo, that definately looks the way to go. I think my surf already has a body lift, but if not will do that to, what a great bunch you all are

Hi Apache, thanks for your reply, i was thinking along the lines of air vents in the wings with pipes mounted close to gearbox tunnel, Range rover style for getting rid of the hot engine air., we get the opposite of wind chill here, ie when we do get wind its very hot and dry, so hopefully both mods will work.

Here's my effort, did the small ones years ago, there the vents we used to fit to the roofs of busses, they have pc fans under em (X4) and do let a fair bit of heat out, the lookalike imprezza one's for the intercooler,
the best thing i ever did tho is add another cooling fan and rework the electrics so they work from a corolla sensor and run on even after the engine (ign) is turned off, also have a second radiator over the back chassi area which has a third fan so it cools pretty quick one the fans are triggered,

No expert but I fitted cooling vents on my bonnet near the front similar to a ford cosworth etc (low pressure area). I tested my airflow over the bonnet using strands of wool tacked on to the bonnet with masking tape and found that I would be drawing air into the bonnet with a reverse scoop up near the windscreen and only releasing the heat build under the bonnet of the surf when when stationary.

Huge difference!!! I used to open my bonnet after a few hours driving to be knocked over bythe heat but it's ok now! The vents get very hot though! works for me...

I am waiting on my isuzu scoop to fit an intercooler The Lovely Boyo style!!! Thanks for the cool write up mate

Have a read of this thread from the Aussie Surf site - lots to consider, especially low and high pressure zones when locating the vents/scoops.
If you're trying to keep these things cool in a hot climate, locate them for performance not aesthetics.
