  • New Surf Owner

Just got my surf(kind of spur of the moment purchase) and thought i would say hello and hopefully get some pointers.

Was down at the beach with the family over easter when i saw a fisherman getting a load of gear out of this pretty cool looking 4x4. Was actually just leaving and all i can remember is the word 'SURF' plastered all down the side. Anyway after a quick google search and finding this sight i was convinced i had to have one. So picked up a 1991 2.4 SSR (i think) last saturday. So far really impressed. The car is really clean, full electrics in perfect working order, 71000 miles, original toyota matts, etc. I am no stranger to the inside of a bonnet (although its been a few years) and from what i can see, hear and smell the engine don't seem bad either.

As i say its been a while since i have worked on vehicles and never on a Diesel. So i thought i may pick you guys brains over a few basics. I am going to give it the obligatory service (filters, oil, and belts). I have been over to roughtrax and see they sell a premium service kit. Anybody have an opinion on the diesel (forte) treatment. I am a bit sceptical as i remember a bottle of Redex cleaning my 2.8v6 engine to the point that it blocked the injectors.

Also i want to get a good workshop manual that will allow me to strip and rebuild the engine (should it ever need it). Is the one that roughtrax sell the best option,? I have heard that the haynes manual is not all that?

Can someone enlighten me on the differences between the red and green coolant. Not sure whats in mine not had a chance to look.

Sorry for the overly long post but i do ten to ramble sometimes! Must just say that there seems to be a pretty good atmosphere in the forums and some of the member rigs are pretty cool! Im not to old to use that word, am i?
