Wot size jump leads?

I was looking for jump leads to keep in the Surf, I asked at the shop, and they said "3 litre, you'll need these" and pulled out leads which looked like they could run the national grid.

What size / amperage leads are REALISTICALLY needed to start a Surf?

Bonus question - where can I purchase a set of reasonable quality leads online.

ideally u wud want 7/800 amp but these wud happilly do the job

I canny get to the last link. The first two leads are the type I don't want, as the plastic hinge breaks too easy.

Make your own?

Get hold of some good quality welding cable, 4 heavy duty clamps and either securely bolt the wire to them (Form the cable ends into an eye and clamp it between 2 washers) or get the right eyes crimped on. I've used this set up (crimped eyes) for years with no problems. Cost me nothing (got all the bits from work) but should be doable for around £15.

Just keep them as short as useful, and use reasonably thick cable. No need to go nuts unless you're gonna draw hundreds of amps all day through them. If it's just for 30 seconds to start the truck, pretty much any leads (which dont cause too much volts drop) will do.

lol, I've melted 2 sets of cheap jump leads recently, they really are crap.

Get the best you can afford, i have a really good set that i've used for 10 years or so, they've started lorrys and everything.

and are long enough that you don't have worry to much how close you park to stuck truck.

As Tony says, don't skimp. Get some with the beefiest cable and clamps you can, and they should last longer than you. Those skanky things a lot of suppliers class as acceptable jump leads are a joke.

always get the largest you can, the better the quality and higher the ampage the better and longer they will last, if they are too small then they'll just burn out if you need a lot to crank a vehicle, especially from a surf which cranks around 700amps. also take into consideration the load from the other vehicle, the bigger the better, or the best you can afford.

smaller leads wont transfer enough to jump bigger engines, especially diesels.
