  • Steering Recall - Why Me?

Okay, after 28 months of Surf ownership, I finally got my arze into gear and phoned Toyota UK regarding the steering recall. Spoke to a very polite and helpful guy who knew exactly what I was on about.

Everything was going swimmingly until it came to the VIN / Chassis number. I took mine from the log book which says it's: K2***-******9, the Toyota guy says that's sounds wrong and that it should start KZN************. Unfortunately the truck is at work at the moment so I can't double check.

I know I should be ashamed asking this after 28 months but where is the VIN plate located? A little voice tells me either on the panel in front of the radiator or on the bulkhead.

Does everyone else who had the recall done have a VIN number that starts KZN?

    Thanks guys.

K2 is probably a typo, could look a bit similar to a Z...

Cheers. The guy also reckons the VIN number should be 13 digits long and mine is only 12.

Andy it could be a typo, but I'll show a little more of the number, the first 5 digits are K2130-.

There is a letter in front of the K.

            Yours will be something like:

            Y-KZN130W-GKMQT-X

If it ends in G, it's an SSR-G and you have been tricking us all saying you have an SSR-X and your number will be

            Y-KZN130W-GKMQT-G

The Y in front just means diesel. Somewhere, I posted up instructions on how to decode it.

Bummer! My numbers nowt like that, according to the log book anyway. I will have to have a good look at the actual VIN plate when I get to work tomorrow. If the logbook is wrong will I have to send it back?

Thanks again to everyone for your help / advice.

Okay, now you're just trying to confuse me!

Please explain the difference. I thought the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) carried the chassis number. What's the frame number assigned to?

                    (My brain hurts!)

If it was a Japanese log book I would be worried!

Elements of the chassis number are in the VIN, but the VIN is longer, unique and should, in your case, start with J.

Chassis number is the same for all surfs that are the same spec as yours.

Okay, took the number from the plate on the bulkhead and this one did have KZN130 in it. I rang Toyota UK again and passed on the correct info, which they said sounded more like the real thing! So hopefully it won't be too long before I hear about the recall, 5 to 6 weeks maybe.

The thing is the number on the log book bears no resemblance to the one I took from the plate. Should I inform the DVLA and if I do is it likely there will be a load of hassle?
