Anyone know about jeeps?

My dads 4 litre jeep straight 5 petrol jeep overheats when towing a trailer, its always fine though it may run a little hot its never in the red until he hitches up a trailer and then as soon as he gets ten miles the needles very quickly jumps into the red. does anyone know of any common problems with these which could cause this to happen?
