as for the golf i hate them too. was just trying to think off the top of my head lol. and failed lol
regardless of this, i still wouldnt be put off by a high milage BMW E36. they really are well built. my 325i had 125,000 miles on the clock and i had it a year and drove like new! just go for one with a long MOT and lots if not full service history. they are good up to 180,000 miles if looked after.
this is the only decent one i could find. not low milage but i wouldnt be put off by it at all. its a nice car (apart from the wheels).http://http://search.autotrader.co.u...cleRegLetter=N
just my opinion cough cough lol

Well, I like to wind BDT up...

Anyway, as it happens, I live next to a car lot and saw a 325tds for sale for about 1700 there on my way back from work, about 10 minutes before I saw this thread.

It was a shocker by the way, and the car lot's a polish job with a garden shed for an office, so I'm not proposing that as a good buy.

Thanks guys, I had thought the 2.5 tds was pretty bullit proof, and I don't mind highish milage, as I rekon those tds engines should be good for 300k + as most diesel engines are ( if looked after of course)
I've seen all those on the auto trader site, and there are a couple at 2-3k with 1 or 2 ownersa and full service history which look tempting.

The only draw back to this is that to fund this new car I will have to sell my pug, and unfortunately my beloved surf, and some other stuff too.

                      Still working for the man!

For what it's worth, I have an E36 328i Auto 1997, it's a cracking car, it's got 170000 on it now, it dosen't use a drop of oil, extremely comfortable and is good for at least 35mpg on motorway work and about 28mpg on stop/start driving.
I love it and would recomend one to anybody, brilliant car !!!

That's what I like to hear, but I doo need much better mpg than that to make it viable, like 45 mpg mixed will do.

I'll see what happens, some more research needed me thinks, and put a for sale sign on the surf. :

Hmmm, 45mpg mixed driving? Possible I suppose, depending on the model. My 2001, 320D, averages about 40mpg. I researched quite a bit before I bought mine and the general concensus of opinion was that BMW's quoted mileage figures are pretty hard (if not var nigh impossible) to achieve.

I would imagine if you do a lot of motorway driving, and don't hoof it, 45mpg is within the reach of a E36 320D.
'Tis better to sting than to be stung!

you would get a lot more if you just sold the mrs.! that way you get to keep your motors and get another one! and providing your good with your right hand...everyones a winner!

in all seriousness though, i think you might find it rather difficult to find a luxury saloon that does 45mpg for around £2000? IMO anyway.
if MPG is the main issue then you might have to settle with a hatchback or something else.
try a search in autotrader and put MPG in the keyword box and dont put any make in the search box. might come up with a few things?
