Most Open Source software tends to be free to use. Some stuff is commercial, but it tends to be the more specialised stuff. Looking on places like freshmeat.net and such will give you an idea of what you can use for your usual tasks.

In what regard? I believe Sancho uses a Mac, so it may be worthwhile brainpicking him.

You'll probably pay double for a macbook vs. a random Laptop on vista..

Most programs on Mac OS are a bit more expensive then a PC.

I love them an despite the fact that for my personal uses a pc is better i'd still loved to have got an iMac but it was over £900 for the model i wanted..

Worse still i think all in my new pc cost in excess of £1000 with all the other bits of cr*p i got!

Sounds like a decent system mate!

Terrabite HD aint that over the top!! Will allow you to keep all your stuff on there without having to pi$$ around. Ive got a 320gb hard drive an its about 60% full at the moment!

Im not sure why a graphics card would be more suited towards a CAD program etc. But as long as it does it thats all that matters!

The only item I dont see mentioned is a monitor, with photography the monitor is crucial, a lot of flat screens/lcd are impossible to calibrate properly for PS work regardless what they say on the tin, I still use a crt, and will till it blows because of this, Samsung have a couple of syncmaster ones I've seen recommended and also apple, these are around the £300 mark, under £200 and they just don't cut it. Pro screen's are around 1300 quid by the way, if you want to get serious. H
