I think the problem is coming up with a system that people can just get right into.

Its only us geeks that can hop from one to t'other! Im pretty sure 80% of the people i know would spend about 20 minutes looking for the tab to close a window on a OSX!

net books may change a lot - people aren't willing to pay £100 for an operating system on a machine that only costs £100-200, especially when the latest and 'greatest' OS won't even look at that hardware. MS has got round this so far by giving XP away free (or even paying manufacturers to install it instead of linux), but that can't last.

Doing well on my mock exams.. brushing up on networks at the moment. Then theres a few other bits i need to just get clear an we'll see if im ready for an actually exam!!

Will a Linux system be able to run all my old stuff as well as newer progs?
Been thinking of a fresh system for some time now (pc is about 4 years old)
By old stuff i mean....stuff thats a couple or 3 yrs old like my video editing software!
Basically would i benefit from dumping everything MS and putting on linux??

M$ and *nix programmes are completely different beasts. You can, however, use an emulator like WINE if you're insistent on trying to run M$ progs, (although it's not guaranteed to work with everything). You'll usually find a *nix prog which is equivalent to, or usually better, than most M$ based progs, however.

Most are free (Open office is equivalent to MS Office, Firefox to Internet explorer for example), the ones you have to pay for are usually also expensive in Windows (Matlab for example).

For video and audio editing, internet, day to day stuff there's going to be very good (better than Windows) free equivalents. Virtually all your documents will be usable fine (.doc, .jpg etc) without any problems.

I have another 2 PCs in the loft and one on loan to my mum, so i can keep one on the net for all those downloads and advice!!!
Just had so many repeat niggly problems with this old Packard Bell i want to try linux.(it may have to wait til i get my office finished first tho')
