What do they do then? Perch around on a tree limb over winter?
Some go to warmer places, others turn a dull brown and lurk. Nesting is only for egg-laying and chick-feeding time, which makes this the perfect time to put boxes up. Once the snow's cleared. If you got any. Lucky beggers.

Seriously. If they don't stay in a nest, what do they do over winter?

They live in hollows in trees, holes in buildings and in bushes. Nest are only for bringing up chicks. They will happily live in bird boxes though, they just don't build a nest.

That's what I was asking. I know the nest part is only a bairn thing as such, but they don't just sit freezing their knacks off outside for the other nine months or so.

yes they do....except for the clever ones that go south for a tan.
i put a load of fresh wild bird food out this morning for our house guest that are living in the loft
thats wicked dude
iam have a big plan around wild life thats taken me 2 years to start off
and longer to think about
but no were near finished yet tho early stages still
but in the long run its going to be great
we got 5 different nest in our loft which i think are sparrows.they moved in shortly after we moved in here as their old home was demolished to build a dozen houses on.
I love to hear them singing away in the summer especially when they have chicks in the nest and they start about 6am.There is also a breeding pair of magpies which have been returning to our garden for the last 4 years to feed and they encourage their young to come down to the pond and waterfall to drink and bath sometimes which is so funny to watch.I will have to get some pics this year if they return again
Its just a shame i couldn't of bought the bungallow i like a few months ago as it had a massive rear garden which i was planning to turn some of it into a wild garden for the birds and wildlife.
yea stormforce take some pics that would be nice to see
i have a very simuler plan
its just the guy over the backs wont sell me his dead bit of garden thats a dump i have offered a very good price for it but i thinks he is going to biuld on it
its only 52ft by 26ft not that i have mesured it
i all so have pics of me cleaning up this peace of ground taking 60ft trees down removeing rubbish and rebiulding a wall all at my own cost
think its better for him to sell it now before i claim it off him
