What are the main differences between a 2nd and 3rd generation Surf ? I know the question makes me sound thick but I cant help it I was born that way

Totally different vehicles apart from similar engines in the 3 Ltr.

3rd gens have a lift up tailgate (hatchback) but the glass can still be lowered like the 2nd gen.
The fuel filler is on the passenger side on the 3rd gen.
16" wheels fitted to 3rd gens, 15" on 2nd gen.
3rd gens have a centre differential which allows 4 wheel drive to be used on the road. (all wheel drive)
3rd gens have a slightly larger cargo area.

Probably better off-road than a standard 2nd gen. as they are coil springs all round so better articulation. I know that the transfer boxes are different to the 2nd gen.

Yes.
4 wheel drive is selectable the same as the 2nd gen.
